Electronic verification of hazardous waste
disposal: By law, Stadtwerke Leipzig GmbH
must introduce an electronic system to verify
the disposal of hazardous waste by 31 March
2010. All the necessary preparations for a timely
introduction were made in 2009 as part of an
extensive project. Defined IT interfaces will
ensure the electronic exchange of data between
waste producers, transport companies and waste
disposers called for by the authorities.
No contaminated sites needed remediation
in 2009: Stadtwerke Leipzig GmbH owns land
on which the soil or groundwater could be
polluted as a result of previous industrial use.
Possible contamination is investigated under
the “notice of exemption from responsibility for
the remediation of contaminated sites” in close
coordination with the authorities. In 2009, the
groundwater was monitored at two sites (Arno-
Nitzsche-Strasse 35 and Eutritzscher Strasse
14b), and initial investigations were made at the
former Mitte and Lindenau heating stations and
the Lausen transformer substation. The investigations
showed that there was no short-term
need for remediation measures on this land in
2009. However, Stadtwerke Leipzig GmbH has
made provisions to cover any future remediation
of contaminated sites.
1.8 Changes in the holdings portfolio
In the course of the restructuring of the holdings
portfolio, SWL Anlagenvermögensverwaltungs
GmbH, Leipzig (AVV), and SWL Kapitalvermögensverwaltungs
GmbH, Leipzig (KVV),
were merged with Stadtwerke Leipzig GmbH
with effect from 1 January 2009. Furthermore,
Stadtwerke Leipzig GmbH increased its holding
in Heizkraftwerk Eutritzscher Strasse GmbH &
Co. KG, Leipzig from 0.05% to 25.16%.
2 Income situation, financial position,

2.1 Income situation
Sales development in the Trading segment:
In Energy Marketing the development of sales
in terms of the amount of electricity sold fell by
3.6% from 1,915 GWh in 2008 to 1,847 GWh in
2009. During the same period, natural gas sales
were down 7.4% from 1,578 GWh in 2008 to
1,461 GWh in 2009. These figures largely reflected
the cyclical fall in demand and the intense
competition. In the heating market, sales volumes
for district heating increased, mainly due
to the cooler weather. Sales of district heating
rose by 4.1% from 1,284 GWh to 1,332 GWh.
Sales in Wholesale Energy Trading increased in
line with the trading market: electricity trading
from 33,462 GWh to 35,082 GWh, gas trading
from 6,421 GWh to 7,504 GWh.
