more rounds into his shotgun without
having to turn it over! To no one's surprise,
four shooters DQ'd on that stage
alone for breaking the plane.
Another controversial design and
procedural call was on stage 7, "Bring
the Black Tape," an all-rifle stage. The
props were instantly recognizable, rwo
sidewalls with a center dished in, with
small ports and narrow slots. The RO
informed everyone that the "no retreat"
rule would be enforced. That is,
once you've engaged targets at a further
shooting position, you couldn't
back up to re-engage targets from a
closer position. For stage #7, the right
and left walls were defined as one parallel
shooting position. That meant if
you went forward to the slots, you
couldn't back up to the other side wall.
You had to fire right-left-center, or leftright-center.
One shooter in my squad
was stopped when he forget, shot the
left wall ports, then the center, and
tried to go to the right wall. He had
misses and FTE penalties applied to his
score for the targets on the right, essentially
zeroing his stage score.
The mixup apparently was caused
by another stage that is a classic USPSA
stage. With four walls, a door, and
windows, stage 4, "Spring House
Cleaning," was instantly recognizable.
Once you entered the "building," if
you tried to go back to a previous
shooting location you'd crash right
into the RO who was racing along behind
you. Somehow the "no-retreat"
rule for that stage got applied to all the
stages.
Another point of discussion were
the lane markers. Some of the stages
were quite long, like stage 1, "Will
Michael Remember," at 75 yards long,
and stage 12, "Gully Whacker," at almost
100 yards long. Trying to mark
the shooting lanes with 2x4's laid on
the ground would have required
enough lumber to frame a small house.
The shooting lanes were delineated by
yellow rope strung along rebar hammered
into the ground. The rope was
a foot or so off the ground. On stage 1
1 saw Bruce Piatt trip on the rope but
recover and continue. On stage 12,
one competitor tripped and dropped
Dusty shuffle. On Stage #11,
"Varmints in the Garden," the
shooter is indeed moving straight
away from the camera while
shooting directly to the right. He
didn't brush any closer to the 180
than most of the rest of us.
