tice. It hangs up on your leather, can't
be used with concealment gear, and
shows up in your vision when you
present the gun — not cool. I was able
to make it work by using a shorterbarreled
version of my normal competition
revolver, but that was a disappointment
also. The laser emitters
in these systems "listen" for the shock
of the hammer striking the firing pin.
In a double-action revolver, there are a
lot of metal parts bashing into one another
when you shoot quickly. As a result,
I'd get one hit when the cylinder
snapped into place, one hit when I
fired the shot, and another hit when I
released the trigger. Again, not cool.
In the meanwhile, I'd asked
Beamhit to send me their LT500 emitter,
the flush-fitting unit that I'd seen
on a demo gun at the show. It took a
few months, but eventually the LT.500
appeared in my inbox.
This is a different animal. Instead of
the large 3-by-2-inch protuberance
used by the LT100, the LT500 fits almost
entirely within the barrel. Only a
small plastic end cap protrudes from
the muzzle, allowing the shooter to
practice one-shot draws, and even
shot-to-shot reloads with true doubleaction-only
guns.
The LT500 pushed right into ni)
pistols, and delivered a
single flash of light each
time the striker fell — assuming
I had the tension
on the cap set correctly.
If it was too tight, or too
loose, I wouldn't get any
flashes at all. This eventually
turned into a sec-
From kludgy to cool. The
LT100 emitter (top, both photos)
is inexpensive, but it's fairly
limiting. The Beam hit system
really isn't useful for an IPSC
shooter until you upgrade to the
LT500 emitter (bottom, both
photos).
PRECISION BULLETS
What are you waiting for?
THE DIFFERENCE IS...
The Black Bullet was developed in 1990
to use as a practice round in indoor
ranges where smoke contaminated with
lead. mercury and arsenic, a health hazard.
is virtually eliminated so that no
harmful gases would be emitted at the
point of firing or at impact. The black bullet
accomplished this and much more.
The coating developed by Precision
Bullets can withstand temperatures of up
to 2700 degrees. which means that the
bullet will not melt in any barrel or emit
excessive smoke. The bullets are cast
from certified 6/2 lead alloy, then put
through a dry lube process encasing
them in Precision's unique coating and
sized to exact specifications.
ond phone call to Beamhit, and a second
emitter. The sleeve on the LT500
they sent me was defective, but after
THAT go-round, the final system fell
into line.
By IPSC standards, the system is
fairly slow to respond, and a trifle
vague because of it. At speed the flash
of the dot is actually a slash, but
the scoring was accurate
enough to be useful on the oneshot
draw.
For the price (suggested retail is
$299 with the LT100 emitter,
$529 with the LT500), it's an
expensive toy, but it does make
dry-fire practice a lot more enjoyable.
Don't bother buying a
system with the LT190 emitter
for IPSC, but if you can find a
reasonably-priced LT500, it
just might be worth it.
