I've been most impressed by individuals
(most notably Chris Rumbold,
hurdles mounted by our government.
About Getting a Browning Gold
Dear Front Sight,
In one of the latest issues of Front
Sight, a letter writer was anguishing
over obtaining an action shooting version
of the Browning Gold shotgun. I
would suggest contacting Briley (briley.com)
as their website has several
items of interest to the subject project.
Fix Bad 3-Gun Gun Handling!
Dear Editor.
It is 3-gun time again and lots ot little
black holes are showing at matche.,
unfortunately' they are not just on targets,
but on the muzzles of rifles and
shotguns.
I love picking up a different gun
and trying new challenges, and thank
you to the great people who go to all
the work of designing, organizing, and
officiating these matches, but we have
a gun handling problem. I thought
maybe it was in my little part of the
world here in Montana, but I have seen
and heard of much poor handling at
major 3-gun matches with experienced
and otherwise safe shooters. We would
never think of picking up a pistol and
showing our buddy our new front sight
if we were not in the safety area or at
the line, but I have seen plenty of it
with long guns.
Now complaining is not my goal, I
have some ideas: Here in Missoula at
Big Sky Practical Shooters, Paul Minor,
our club president, insists that ALL
long guns be cased upon arrival at the
range and are brought to the line and
only then uncased. After the shooter
finishes, a squad member brings the
case to the shooter and the gun is recased.
We also do not allow scoring behind
the shooter. Many 3-gun stages
are pretty slow clears, but if a shooter
decides he missed something and starts
backing up you can have trouble. A
"spectator" line (I have seen marking
tape used) can also help control the
shooting area. Course design could
also help improve 3-gun safety. Let's
get rid of the targets very close to the
180. With diagonal stage design and an
unfamiliar gun it is easy- for the shooter
to get disoriented.
It appears that 3-gun is gaining in
popularity, so now is the time to unify
our safety procedures like we have
with pistol. I am certain there are
many other good ideas out there, let's
hear them.
Thanks for your letter. Robert Spangler
asked me a similar question at the
Area 1 3-gun. He asked: "Why don't we
use empty chamber flags like they do at
high-power matches?"
I don't know the answer, but it
sounds like something the 3-gun community
should discuss.
Thanks again,
