I EXCEPTIONAL SECTIONALS By: Ned Christensen A-12453 Ned Christensen Michigan's 1990 Sectional Championship is going to be talked about in these parts for a long time, and with good reason. Ask any shooter who frequents the Michigan IPSC circuit, and he will almost certainly tell you that it was the best match yet hosted on Michigan soil. The event was hosted by South Kent Practical Shooters. Match Director was consummate perfectionist, Ed Tudor, without whom the match might have been something less than it was. Not that Ed works alone. His band of merry ROs and support staff -- the cooks (great food!) statisticians, stage builders, the sign painter -- all chipped in to make a smooth, fun shoot. Stage one, Concentration Standards: Not your average boring standards. Page 20 Times were short, firing positions and distances varied. Concentration was definitely in order to make sure that you did indeed fire one shot at TI, two at T2, and three at T3 in string one, and the exact opposite in string four. As if that wasn't bad enough, course designer Kevin Travis stipulated that in string two the shooter must do it both ways with a reload in the middle. Stage three, The Night Before: Here the competitor started seated in a reclining chair. At the buzzer, the pistol and ammo were retrieved, from the top of the TV. From the left of the TVIwall, three poppers were engaged, from the right side, two more at the end of a hallway. En route down said hallway, the shooter encountered three rooms, each with a pair of targets. However, the targets in room two were no shoots, in the form of a lifesized picture of Bartles & James. These boys never took a hit, but they came awfully close a few times! At the end of the hallway was box C, from which an unobscured popper was shot. While covering the 12 feet to box D, two more targets, each in their own mm, were engaged. Upon arrival to box D, PP7 became visible and was the last target of the course. Stage four, Wet Pursuit: Good clean fun. The shooter started in the shower, just turning off the water. The pistol and ammo were waiting on the bathroom shelf. After exiting the shower, the shooter engaged PP1, which caused a no-shoot to cover TI. PPI also activated a mover with BAT0 (bungee assisted take-off), which moved right to left, from cover to cover. Stage five, 1 or 2, That is the Question: This was a modified Comstock course in which only one hit per target was required, but the highest two hits per target would be scored. Three banks of four targets challenged the shooter to try to figure out if he should lose time and gain points or save time and lose points. As each successive bank of four was further away and made smaller by hard cover, the quandary was further complicated by making one think it might be worthwhile to doubletap just the first bank and oneeach the rest, or maybe doubletap the first eight and ... well, you get the picture. I suppose some people sat up late with their calculator and figured it all out, but I think most people figured it like I did--I'm here to shoot, not do brain teasers! -- and double tapped 'em all. Stage six, Take Your Pick: This was another stage with two quite different approaches offered to the shooter. Stage props consisted of a rectangular room which the shooter never entered, but had to shoot through (option 2). In the near wall, there were two large windows. In the far wall were two narrow vertical slots. In option 2, the shooter had to move laterally until targets on the other side of the far wall came into view. MICHIGAN /con.t.i targets could be seen from box B, and three from box C. Very few used option two. Most preferred option one, in which the shooter simply climbed a ladder leaning against the near wall for an unobstructed view of all seven targets. Several big names did their part to make this an exceptional sectionals, including Bar-Sto, Metaloy, Safariland, Dave Zimmerman Guns, Second Chance Body Armor, and more. Their support with merchandise and certificates went a long way in giving this match that "big time" aura and was much appreciated. This match might just have set a standard for Michi- gan sectional matches. Next year it is to be held in Brighton, and I can tell you those boys do not like to be out done, so it's bound to be good!
