No <strong>in</strong>juries, considerable damage<br />

An Italian gr<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong> ran through <strong>the</strong> buffer stop at<br />

Stavoren station and caused substantial damage to a<br />

store; however, <strong>the</strong>re were no serious <strong>in</strong>juries. The tra<strong>in</strong><br />

belonged to a Swiss operator; it was be<strong>in</strong>g driven by an<br />

Italian driver, who was piloted by a local Dutch tra<strong>in</strong> driver.<br />

A third person was also <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cab. The ATP system on <strong>the</strong><br />

track did not <strong>in</strong>tervene as <strong>the</strong> on-board system was not<br />

compatible with <strong>the</strong> track-side system. As <strong>the</strong> Italian driver<br />

was not familiar with <strong>the</strong> route, he was accompanied by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Dutch driver, who was distracted as he was talk<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with <strong>the</strong> third person and did not notice <strong>the</strong> trackside<br />

signs.<br />

An <strong>in</strong>vestigation by <strong>the</strong> Dutch NIB is under way and<br />

<strong>in</strong>volves five parties. It is look<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to both organisational<br />

aspects and human factors.<br />
