Polyetheretherketone (PEEK)ThermoplasticTrade Names Manufacturer• ArlonGreene, Tweed & Co.• Victrex PEEKVictrex, USATypical Properties of Polyetheretherketone (PEEK)American EngineeringSIProcessing Temperature 700°F to 750°F 371°C to 399°CGeneral DescriptionPolyetheretherketone, a poly(aryletherketone), is a linear, semi-crystalline,wholly aromatic polymer. It offers outstanding thermal stability and isresistant to a wide range of chemicals. Due to PEEK’s suitability forextreme service conditions, it has found use in many demanding nicheapplications such as high temperature bearings and aircraft radomes andfairings. Specialty grades available include glass, carbon and PTFE filledgrades. In 2004, the price of PEEK ranged approximately from $33.00 to$36.00 per pound at truckload quantities.General PropertiesPEEK is a high performance thermoplastic which is well suited forhigh-temperature environments. In addition, it has good mechanicalproperties, including a flexural modulus among the highest of allthermoplastics. Furthermore, the addition of fillers to PEEK typicallyincreases both its modulus and thermal stability. PEEK is suitable forapplications that will see intermittent exposure to temperatures up to600°F (315°C) and has a maximum continuous service temperature ofapproximately 480°F (250°C). Unfilled PEEK meets UL94 V-0flammability requirements and generates very little smoke uponcombustion. PEEK resists mild acids and bases at elevatedtemperatures, superheated water up to 500°F (260°C), and mostcommon organic solvents. PEEK also has outstanding resistance toradiation, significantly greater than polystyrene, the second mostradiation resistant polymeric material. Samples of PEEK have withstood1100 Mrads without significantly degrading. Sunlight and weatheringresistance are also good, with no loss of properties evident after oneyear of outdoor exposure.Linear Mold Shrinkage 0.001 to 0.005 in./in. 0.001 to 0.005 cm/cmMelting Point 630°F to 640°F 332°C to 338°CDensity 84.3 to 96.8 lb./ft. 3 1.35 to 1.55 g/cm 3Tensile Strength, Yield 16.9 to 31.2 lb./in. 2 x 10 3 11.9 to 21.9 kg/cm 2 x 10 2Tensile Strength, Break 13.1 to 26.1 lb./in. 2 x 10 3 9.2 to 18.7 kg/cm 2 x 10 2Elongation, Break 2.0 to 8.0% 2.0 to 8.0%Tensile Modulus 9.0 to 35.5 lb./in. 2 x 10 5 6.3 to 23.6 kg/cm 2 x 10 4Flexural Strength, Yield 21.6 to 39.8 lb./in. 2 x 10 3 15.2 to 28.0 kg/cm 2 x 10 2Flexural Modulus 4.0 to 20.0 lb./in. 2 x 10 5 2.8 to 14.1 kg/cm 2 x 10 4Compressive Strength 11.0 to 32.0 lb./in. 2 x 10 3 7.7 to 22.5 kg/cm 2 x 10 2Izod Notched, R.T. 0.9 to 2.2 ft.-lb./in. 4.7 to 11.9 kg cm/cmHardness M100 - M124 Rockwell M100 - M124 RockwellThermal Conductivity 1.5 to 6.5 BTU-in./hr.-ft. 2 -°F 0.22 to 0.94 W/m-°KLinear ThermalExpansionDeflection Temperature@ 264 psiDeflection Temperature@ 66 psiContinuousService Temperature0.7 to 1.8 in./in.-°F x 10 -5 1.3 to 3.2 cm/cm-°C x10 -5350°F to 610°F 177°C to 321°C500°F to 640°F 260°C to 338°C428°F to 480°F 220°C to 249°CDielectric Strength 350 to 500 V/10 -3 in. 1.4 to 2.0 V/mm x 10 4Dielectric Constant@ 1 MHzDissipation Factor@ 1 MHzWater Absorption,24 hr.3.0 to 4.2 3.0 to 4.20.001 to 0.005 0.001 to 0.0050.06 to 0.18% 0.06 to 0.18%Typical Applications• Aerospace – Wire and cable insulation, coatings, EMI/RFI shields• Miscellaneous – High temperature bearings, compressor parts,nuclear power plant and oil well applications, military equipment44The Loctite ® Design Guide for Bonding Plastics, Volume 4
