The first volume of Von Baer's classic, complete in itself <strong>and</strong> treating the development of the chicken in the egg. His investigations are fundamental for modern embryology. "Four important advances in embryology are associated with von Baer's name. They are: (a) the discovery of the mammaliam ovum; (b) the proposition known as the Germ-layer-theory; (c) the law of corresponding stages in the development of embryo's; (d) the discovery of the notochord" (Singer 465). Some light browning on the edges of several pages. The plates have been cleaned <strong>and</strong> one plate with a marginal repair, covers in original state but repaired <strong>and</strong> with a sticker stating: Haar & Steinert, Librairie Allem<strong>and</strong>e, 9 Rue Jacob à Paris. The complete work would comprise 3 parts, published between 1828 <strong>and</strong> 1837. 13. Baird, S. <strong>and</strong> T. Brewer <strong>and</strong> Ridgway. A history of North American Birds in 3 vols. being all L<strong>and</strong>-birds. Boston, Little, Brown, 1874. 4to with 64 h<strong>and</strong>coloured woodengraved plates <strong>and</strong> 593 woodcuts in the text. Green cloth (one rebacked). = Nissen IVB, 64; Anker, 25. <strong>Rare</strong> first edition <strong>and</strong> scarce now. € 475,= The colouring of the heads was done under the direction of Mrs. F. Russell of Brookline, Mass. from patterns prepared by Ridgway. 14. Bairei, K. or Bairei Hyakucho Gafu. Bairei's Album of one hundred birds in 2 vols. (Tokyo about 1881/82). With 67 coloured woodblock prints with text in Japanese. Orig. stiched wrs. = Barlett <strong>and</strong> Shohara, Japanese Botany.., p.529: "This was € 1.175,= Kono Bairei's first kacho, for in spite of the title it may be so classified, since many of the pictures emphasize the plants as much as the birds. The illustrations in these volumes are in black (with dilutions to gray), orange-brown (with delutions), <strong>and</strong> vaguely perceptible tinting of the grays with green or blue. Being printed from the same block... the effects are extremely life-like <strong>and</strong> pleasing". Complete copies would comprise 3 vols. with 100 plates. A very pleasing collection of Japanese birds many being waterfowl. Some 20 plates are double paged. In a fine condition. 15. Baker, E.
