---CRETACEOUS FOSSILSDescription.-"Shell of medium size, short-fusiform, nearly twiceas long below as above the periphery of the last volution when viewedfrom in front, and almost regularly sloping from that point to thepointed anterior extremity, as seen in the cast; apical angle about 50'or 55' ; volutions about four; subangular on the periphery and markedby moderately distant hut distinct vertical folds, which are obsoleteon the lower third of the volution, but increase in strength and distancewith the increased growth of the shell. Twelve of these folds can becounted on the body whorl of the best preserved cast. Umbilical cavityin the cast, as left by the removal of the columella, large and destituteof markings or folds of any kind; aperture cuneate-elliptical, sharplypointed below and angular above; surface characters of the shell unknown."(Whitfield)Remarks.-Weller erred in believing that the specimens describedby Whitfield as P. cuneus were young individuals of P. mullicaensk.Ranoe "~ in Newt .7arseu-MT. Volutions four and a half to five in number, ventricose, the upper ones rounded on the exposed parts, even in thecast, with distinct, deeply marked sutures; body volution somewhatshouldered on the top, but not flattened ; belolxr it is short and very rapidlydiminishing, so as to produce nearly a straight line from just belowthe point of greatest diameter to the margin of the cavity left by theremoval of the columella or axis of the shell; aperture imperfect inform, but as seen by the section of the cast must have been acutelyovate, sharply pointed below and gradually widened upward for abouttwo-thirds of its length, and rounded at the upper end; columella, asshown by the axial cavity, large and smooth, without folds or ridges;surface marked by numerous vertical folds, about eight of which maybe counted on the outer half of the body whorl ; these not seen on thecast below the point of greatest diameter, indicating their absence onthe lower part of the volution in the living shell; no remains of spirallines preserved on the specimen."
