THIRTY YEAR RECORDCarl Lawyer Schaeffer, In4A man so quiet that you look twice to becertain you saw him the nrst time, CarlSchaeffer- is a product of Carroll County. Bornin the days of Grover Cleveland and the dazeof the 1892 depression, his birthplace seems tohave 11 special significance--"Silver Run."From the Silver Run Public School, he enteredwester-a Maryland College Preparatory Departmentin 1909 and into the College in 1910.Receiving his Bachelor's Degree in hethen entered Johns Hopkins University,he received his Bachelor of Science Degree inEngineering in 1917. He began his businesscareer in the Drafting Department of Bat-tlettHayward Company, but World War Iinterfered through the 312th F'ield Artillery,79th Division, and his time could scarcely becalled his own from January, 1918, to August,1919. Dur-ing- the latter par-t of this service hewas a student, American School Detachment,at the University of Clermont, Clermont, F'errand,Erunce. One would think this was enoughschooling; yet, on being discharged in August,1919, he became Domestic Science minded andon September 19, was married to Miss Mir-iamRuth Blettner of Hanover, Pennsylvania.Professor of Physics, he beganat W. M. C. in September, 1919, andthat department until 1942. Hehas served as Secretary of the Faculty fromMarch, 1922, to April, 1947; Assistant 'Preasuret'of the College from 1930 to 1942; T'reusnrei-since the death of 01 -. William R. McDaniel.For years, in the interim, Mr. Schaefferoperatedthe College Book StOl·C.Two sons served in Wor-ld War IT; one son,Philip B., from \OY. M. C. in '48,and his daughter, Martha E., is graduatingat 1950 commencement. She is our1950 May Queen.Quietly, efficiently, through the office of theTreasurer of the College, he serves the 800students, the more than 100 employees, theTrustees, the students' parents, the alumni,and finds time to serve his church. He is aLutheran-his home is on Ridge Road wherehe has resided since 1934. Prior to that time,he and resided on the College Cam p,us, where his children were born.It would be difficult to find many alunmi whohave ser-ved their- Alma Mater so well.PERSONALS from ALUMNICLASS OF '95Mr. and Mrs ..
