RECENT EventsA Night to RememberOver 400 dental students, facultyand staff attended the School’sDinner Dance, which included food,dancing and fun. The event was heldat the Marriott Renaissance inDetroit, MI in April. The night wasto honor faculty and staff who haveimpacted the lives of the students oncampus. A special thank you to all ofthe educators at the School who havemade a difference in the student’slives. Congratulations to all ofthe honorees.H. Robert SteimanReceives the I.B. BenderLifetime Educator AwardH. Robert Steiman, D.D.S, Ph.D.,M.S.D., Dean Emeritus of theUniversity of Detroit Mercy Schoolof Dentistry, received the I. B.Bender Lifetime Educator Awardfrom the American Association ofEndodontists (AAE) on Saturday,April 20th, 2013. The award isgiven by the American Associationof Endodontists to a full-timeeducator of at least 15 years.Dr. Steiman’s professional careerhas intertwined with the School forover 40 years. After starting withthe Department of Physiology in1967, Dr. Steiman later graduatedfrom the School of Dentistry withhis D.D.S. in 1973. Fromcompleting a residency programin Endodontics, to joining theEndodontics Department, tochairing the EndodonticsDepartment, Dr. Steiman has beena continued force in the field.After chairing the Department fornumerous years, Dr. Steiman wasnamed interim Dean of the Schoolof Dentistry. The luncheaon provideda wonderful opportunity for local alumni to catch-up with classmates andnetwork with fellow dental professionals.In addition to serving the Universityof Detroit Mercy, he is an activemember of organized dentistrywhile being involved in local, stateand national components of theAAE, American Board ofEndodontics and the AmericanDental Association.8 LEADING EDGE SUMMER 2013
New Alumni ReceptionAdded to CommencementCelebrationA smashing success, the Schoolof Dentistry hosted the first everNew Alumni Reception at theDetroit Yacht Club on Thursday,May 9th. In conjunction withcommencement, the event provideda perfect atmosphere for graduatingstudents to celebrate their scholarlysuccess. With students, family andfriends in attendance, the event madefor an incredible evening.Academy of GeneralDentistry (AGD) AnnualSession in Nashville“Music City” was the setting for thisyear’s Academy of General Dentistry(AGD) Annual Session. On Friday,June 28th, Dr. Mert Aksu, Dean ofthe School of Dentistry, hosted theannual Alumni Reception which tookplace in the Marriott Renaissance inNashville, TN.National DentalAssociation (NDA)Annual SessionUDMSD faculty, staff, and alumnitraveled to National Harbor, MD, inJuly to attend the 2013 NationalDental Association’s (NDA) AnnualSession. The School’s AlumniReception was held on Saturday, July27th, at the Gaylord National Resort.Summer Enrichment ProgramNew dental hygiene alums from leftto right, Sara Dziordziewicz, RashaHermez, Emily Zammit, Silvana Lako,and Kayla Tile, aboveJuliette Daniels, Director of StudentAffairs takes a moment with BasamShamo and Jennifer Shango, leftThe School of Dentistry has teamed up with the Michigan Area HealthEducation Center to offer aspiring dental students the chance to improve theirskills this summer. The Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) is a free, six-weekprogram that runs from May through June to help expose students, particularlythose from disadvantaged backgrounds, to careers in the dental field. In additionto being exposed to the clinical atmosphere and educational environment,student had the opportunity to practice multiple strategies for taking theDental Admission Test (DAT).
