He earned hisB.D.S. from King Abdulaziz University, his D.Sc.D. from BostonUniversity, and his specialty certificate in Pediatric Dentistryfrom the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.Dr. Elmer NewnessClinical Assistant ProfessorIn January, Dr. Elmer Newness was hired full-time as ClinicalAssistant Professor in the Department of Patient Management.Prior to joining the School of Dentistry, he taught part-timeat Youngstown State University and owned a dental practice.Dr. Newness received his D.D.S. from The Ohio StateUniversity and his M.B.A. from University of Phoenix.Dr. Helena PerezInterim Chairperson of the Department ofOral and Maxillofacial SurgeryDr. Helena Perez was recently appointed Interim Chairpersonof the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. She hasbeen with the University of Detroit Mercy since January 2007and has served as both Interim Chairperson and Director ofPredoctoral Education for the Department of Oral and MaxillofacialSurgery. Dr. Perez earned both her D.D.S and her Certificatein Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from University of Texas.Prof. Erin RelichAssistant ProfessorProfessor Erin Relich joined the full-time faculty in Januaryas Assistant Professor in the Department of Periodontologyand Dental Hygiene. She has been with the School ofDentistry as a part-time faculty member since June 2012.Ms. Relich received her B.S. from University of Michiganand her M.S. from Central Michigan University.Dr. Kanokraj SrisukhoAssociate ProfessorIn May, Dr. Kanokraj Srisukho was hired full-time asAssociate Professor in the Department of RestorativeDentistry. She comes to the School of Dentistry fromMidwestern University. Dr. Linda WebermanDr. Linda WebermanClinical Assistant ProfessorDr. Linda Weberman joined the full-time faculty inJanuary as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Departmentof Patient Management. Prior to joining us, she practicedgeneral dentistry and served as part-time faculty atseveral local community colleges. Dr. Weberman receivedher D.D.S. from University of Detroit Mercy.Restorative Clinical Case:Traumatic FracturePerformed by Andrew Nguyen (’13)A 21-year-old female patient presented to UHC emergency clinic with the chiefcomplaint of “I want to fix my front teeth.” The patient states that she wasinvolved in a traumatic accident two weeks ago, resulting in a fracture of #8 and#9. At the initial appointment, it was found that the fracture for #8 was onlythrough dentin, while the fracture for #9 involved the pulpal tissues. To helpalleviate the pain, a gross pulpal debridement was completed.To repair her anterior teeth, she had a Class IV composite planned for #8 and anRCT followed by a composite core on #9. A pin was also placed on #9 to aidwith retention of the core. Over the next few appointments, these procedureswere completed. The end result is that #8 and #9 were built up with composite,thus repairing her front teeth and restoring her smile.Mr. Art Foster is leading the wayto a “greener clean” for UDMSDUDMSDGoes Green!Under the direction of Art Foster,Custodial Manager for the School ofDentistry, the Corktown Campus istaking strides to go green. Withperformance and affordability being atop concern, sustainability is often aforgotten factor.
