I am a holistic practitioner, which means I dealwith supplements and herbs to heal the body. My experience and views are fromthe Eastern side of medicine, which can often put me at odds with the Westernworld of medicine that is prevalent in the United States. That being said, thereare no Eastern cures for a tooth that is in need of a crown, and I have beencoming to U of D for about 10 years. I am also a yoga instructor that practicesthe power of breath. The “conflict” between East and West particularly showsup when I deny use of any type of sedative for any drilling. I have to admit, it isfun to see the horror on the new dental student’s face when they read my chart.I imagine they think I will be flinching and jerking while they attempt to drill mtooth, but that is never the case. To me the experience is a little uncomfortable, but not at all painful.Recently, I was diagnosed with an abscessed tooth. It gave me no painwhatsoever, so my inclination was to try and treat the infection that I believecould be systemic in my body-which for me, means the tooth is only a symptom.Kyle was very respectful of my views, but showed great concern as well asmonumental patience for me. I repeatedly asked him to explain the entireprocess, almost at times calling upon him to put me through 4 years of dentalschool in a ½ hour explanation. He never faltered in his attempt to care for mydental health, always showing what I would call excellent “chair side manner.”Such is my trust in him, that I will attempt to follow his care to the letter. Thistype of person with such dedication and genuine care for his patients is rareindeed and an excellent reflection upon your facility. Thank you.Sincerely,Lyn ScharretThis issue’s letter was submitted by Dr. Joel Grand24 LEADING EDGE SUMMER 2013
