STUDENT NEWSHonors and AwardsAmerican Student DentalAssociation (ASDA)Winning the second-highesthonor, the UDMSDAmerican Student DentalAssociation (ASDA) chapter received theGold Crown Award for Most ImprovedChapter for the 2012-2013 year duringthe ASDA Annual Session in Atlanta,GA. The award is given to the chapterthat shows the most improvement inworking towards the “Ideal ASDA”chapter- the conference’s highest honor.The award recognizes the efforts ofboth the Executive Board and theinvolved students, as they work torebuild the chapter on campus.When asked to summarize theexperience, the Director of StudentAffairs and Staff Advisor for the ASDAChapter, Juliette Daniels stated “OurASDA Chapter was truly deserving ofthe Gold Crown Award for MostImproved Chapter. Over the past year,the Executive Board worked extremelyhard to create and sustain an engagingyear of programming, membershipactivities, and events to enhance theoverall student experience here at UDM.The Executive Board began withthoughtful goals and a thorough plan;their passion, dedication, and energyallowed them to even exceed their ownexpectations. It was truly a successfulyear and I am honored to have been asmall part of their accomplishmentsover the past year. More importantly,these students have created a vibrantASDA Chapter full of students excitedto get involved with their dental educationand the profession of dentistry.”Furthermore, Faculty Advisor, Dr. GaryE. Jeffers noted “It is indeed a pleasureto work with such a fine group of wellmotivatedand forward-thinkingstudents who are constantly planning,developing and implementing ways tomake their ASDA Chapter the best thatit can be. The UDM Chapter is blessedwith many outstanding leaders who allcontribute their fullest in engaging othersto achieve such levels of success. Theyhave a bright future, and I anticipateeven greater achievements as we lookahead to another noteworthy year.”Also at the ASDA meeting, AlexMartella (‘14) was elected as a District 6trustee, while Gabriel Holdwick (‘14)was elected as Speaker of the House.Holdwick has also served as ASDADistrict 6 cabinet secretary and as hischapter’s vice president and legislativechair. Student Research and Academic LeadershipAmerican DentalEducation Association(ADEA)Eight posters were presented during the2013 annual American Dental EducationAssociation (ADEA) meeting in Seattle,WA in mid-March. Both dental anddental hygiene students participated.Research included:Yasmin Mikail (’13) and Rasha Asso (’13) -You Tube Videos: Do they have apositive effect on the teaching andlearning process?(URM) Dental Hygiene RecruitmentPipeline ProgramEight dental and dental hygiene studentsdevoted a total of 45 hours as studenteducators for the underrepresentedminority (URM) Dental HygieneRecruitment Pipeline Program; organizedby Dr. Deirdre Young and Dr. BarbaraPurifoy-Seldon. The students, trained aspart of the Workshops in AcademicDentistry and the Explorations inDentistry student leadership programs,presented lectures and conducted handsonactivities for 18 participants.Student educators: Rasha Hermez (’13),Yasmin Mikail (’13), Daniel Miller (’14),Erin DeWitt (’14), Cuong Dao (’14),Jennifer Shango (’13), Stephanie Chen (’14).Jennifer Shango (’13) - Impact of a handsoncourse on student’s understanding ofperiodontal surgical procedures.Stephanie Chen (’14) - An investigationof student perception of online andin-class course elements.Jenna Lau (’13) - Dental studentperception of the usefulness of anin-house laboratory technician.Joe Chang (Periodontics Resident) -Orthodontics-periodonticsinterdisciplinary dental education survey.Aziz Moukled (’14) - Why do studentsattend class?Basam Shamo (’13) and Dina El-hout (’14) -Attitudes of dental students on rubberdam isolation.Sarmad Alyas (’13) - American DentalCareers Fellowship Program(ADCFP) poster.Also, for the fourth year in a row, onestudent has been selected to participatein the ADEA/ADEAGies FoundationAcademic Dental Career FellowshipProgram.
