Hardware/software requiredAppendix C – <strong>Practical</strong>s 383The hardware required for this practical is as follows:• Two or more personal computers or laptops.• One network interface card (NIC) or Ethernet card per computer.• One unshielded twisted pair (UTP) patch cable per computer.• UTP hub(s) with requisite number of ports.• Power supplies for the various computers <strong>and</strong> hubs as required.• One additional Ethernet card with a UTP patch cable.The software required is as follows:• All the computers loaded with Windows 98 second edition operating system(Windows 95, NT, 2000 <strong>and</strong> ME will also do, this book shall refer toWindows 98 SE).• Driver software for the NIC as provided by the manufacturer.• Additional third-party Ethernet packet capturing utility called PacketBoy apart of the NetBoy Suite of applications from NDG software.ImplementationStartup the PacketBoy utility by clicking on Start, selecting Programs, NDG Software,PacketBoy, PacketBoy x.x. Maximize the window by clicking on the title-bar <strong>and</strong> thenensure that the correct adapter is selected. If not, follow the procedure as described in<strong>Practical</strong> 3. Select the Capture Console from the Tools menu. Click on the button with thered circle to Start Capture.Call-up the DOS prompt <strong>and</strong> ping a remote host computer.
