Council will tour the city with the service director and mayor to review the roads in need of repair. A petition from residents requesting a bike path on Highland Drive from Valley Parkway to Edgerton or South Edgerton Design and installation of pavers and finely crafted natural stone patios, water elements, accent lighting and sustainable planting plans was discussed. Weidig said after the road repair is completed, the road will be wider but there will not be a bike path. All council members agreed that the cost of a bike path is prohibitive. Noah B. Coyner and Joseph J. Lecznar were appointed part-time firefighters. Coyner is also an EMT and Lecznar is also a paramedic. Police Chief Rich Mannarino said that the Brecksville schools expressed interest in applying for a grant through the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS). The grant would provide for improved security by funding surveillance outside some of the schools, mapping of the schools and locks. Easements were obtained from all but two Riverview Road residents for a sanitary sewer project. Engineer Gerry Wise said there is ample room in the right of way on these two properties for work on the project. It will cost the city $20,000 for engineering for two storm and slope repair projects; one project is for Meadow Lane and one for Chippewa Road. Wise will finalize plans and specifications, obtain easements and develop bid documents for the Meadow Lane project for $11,500. “This project will improve the inlet capacity at the top of the hill, increase the capacity of the storm sewer and extend the storm sewer significantly down the hill beyond the obvious slippage/failure areas as depicted on the preliminary plan’” Wise said. “The cost is slightly higher than budgeted; it will be $125,000 to $150,000.” Wise explained the Chippewa Road project will “extend the sewer to the base of the steeper section of the slope, create a distilling pool to dissipate the energy and rebuild the failed section of the slope.” Engineering for this project will cost $8,500 and the total project cost is expected to be $75,000 to $100,000. A permit from the Metroparks is required because the work is on park property. Hruby said the city charter requires council to have a law director and recommended Steve Klonowski as a replacement for Paul Grau. The Brecksville <strong>Magazine</strong>, July 2011 School Board l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l School board Awards Teachers, Reviews Finance Options by Anastasia Ealey May 23 school board meeting Despite a passing funnel cloud that sent attendees of the May 23 meeting of the Brecksville-Broadview Heights School Board into the basement for cover, the board still got around to rewarding excellence and taking stock of its financial status. Bonnie Monteleone conferred the BBH Education Association Friend of Education award onto Terri Neff. In addition, Board President George Balasko awarded six instructors in the BBH school district with the distinction of Master Teacher, for which they had to go through an extensive application process. “Thanks for putting in extra effort, which makes our school district excellent,” Balasko said. The board also reviewed the district’s five-year financial forecast, which it originally passed in November 2010. Chief Financial Officer Karen Obratil explained the changes made since then, which would be added to the May forecast. “Real Estate tax collections are down by $371,000 from the November forecast, and we don’t know when people will pay their taxes. Total revenue is $289,000 less than forecasted in November,” she said. In addition, the proposed reductions in the state budget have posed further challenges, according to Obratil. “For financial year 2012, we will lose $911,000 in Tangible Personal Property, due to the new state budget,” she said. “We will lose $6 million over the next three years by 2015.” Superintendent Scot Prebles gave a presentation on the state budget impact to the BBH school district. “We are $2.9 million different from where we thought we would be,” he said. “We will have a deficit of $19.7 million by 2015. We are going to reduce by almost 60 staff members over a three-year period.” He also stated that further reductions to the budget were needed. “We did not anticipate the abruptness and size of budget reductions through the state budget,” he said while detailing some potential reductions that could help alleviate the burden. Balasko gave a grave account of a meeting he and other school board members from across the state attended with Gov. I don’t see any way around it, even with the best reports from the state.
