y Judy Hein Terrigno In the classic 1939 film, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Jimmy Stewart’s character, Jefferson Smith, goes to Washington to fight corruption and make a difference in politics. If you would like to make a difference in politics but stay closer to home than Mr. Smith, as a resident of Brecksville you could run for city council. If interested in joining council, you should know that council meetings are held the first and third Tuesdays of the month. Clerk of Council Mary Scullin said, “There are six committees which hold meetings as needed.” City council and committee meetings are posted on the sunshine calendar outside the front door of city hall. To run for Brecksville’s council, you must be 18 years old, a registered voter and a resident of the city for two years. Council members cannot hold any other municipal office or municipal employment in the City of Brecksville while on council or, as the charter states, “directly or indirectly, solicit, contract for, receive, or be interested in any profit or emolument from or on account of any contract, job, work or service with or for the municipality.” The Brecksville council is made up 16 Running for Office in brecksville of seven council people, all running at large. “The three top vote-getters receive four-year terms, and the fourth receives a two-year term,” Scullin explained. “This keeps the terms staggered so that there is always an experienced person on council. Four council members are running (for election) every two years.” There are no term limits for council members. According to the charter, in 2011 a Brecksville council person should receive $16,500 as yearly compensation with life insurance and pension “pick-up” benefits. But with communities facing difficult economic times, Mayor Jerry Hruby said, “The members of council are returning to the 2009 salary, which is $15,500 for council members and $17,500 for council president.” Council positions are considered part time and paid accordingly, although any community council person can tell you that the hours can be lengthy. At the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections (BOE), located at 2925 Euclid Ave. in downtown Cleveland on the second floor of the building, you can register to run as a candidate in the election. The BOE provides the necessary forms and petitions. There are even people here to assist you with the registration process.” Once registered, the next step is to circulate the petition and get the signatures of registered voters living in Brecksville. The 2011 deadline date to file the completed petition with the BOE is Aug. 9, and the cost is $45. While it is not mandatory, Lawler suggests candidates take advantage of the pre-check program. The 2011 deadline for this service is Aug. 2. “The pre-check program checks the signatures on the petition against a list of valid registered voters. The precheck gives the candidate a chance to make corrections if there is a problem with any of the petition’s signatures,” Lawler said. All petitions are checked after the filing deadline, but by then any problems cannot be corrected. Tuesday, Nov. 8, is the day of the general election. According to the BOE, the terms of Gerald T. Broski, Louis N. Carouse, Michael T. Harwood and Larry J. Potla are up this year. The council president is chosen by the majority of the council members at the first regular council meeting in January. The council president serves a term of one year and presides over the council meetings. As for the mayor, that position is a full-time position for four years with pay and “pension pick-up” benefits. Although the charter lists the 2011 compensation for the mayor as $103,322, like council, Mayor Hruby said he has, “returned to the 2009 wage of $97,391 a year by choice.” “I will run for re-election this year,” Hruby said. When he ran for office in 2007, he was unopposed. He has been the mayor of Brecksville for 24 years, winning the first time in 1987 in a three-man race. His brother, Jack, was mayor for 17 years before his death in 1986. letterS to the editor l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l Schools Teach Responsibility to Global Society, Not USA To the Editor: One of the most important lessons we can teach our children is that we are privileged to live in a great nation founded on principles of freedom and we are all indebted to those who were and are willing to fight and even die for the freedom we enjoy. One would think that public school officials, those who work for a governmental entity such as a school district, would appreciate the value of instilling patriotism in our youth. But the BBH School Board has shown it places greater value on instilling in our children a sense of responsibility to the “global society.” Recently, the board approved seven BBHHS educational objectives, one of which is to teach children responsibility to a “global society.” In May, the board overwhelmingly rejected (for the second year in a row) a member’s suggestion that the school add the educational objective of teaching children responsibility to their country. It is a sad day in America when officials entrusted with the education of our children send a message that it is more important to be a good member of the “global society” than it is to be a good citizen of this great nation. Those who died for our freedom did so out of loyalty to our nation. We pledge allegiance to the United States of America, not a global society. We encourage letters to the editor.
