Memorial day Parade and Ceremony Mark Anniversaries
by Anastasia Ealey
Brecksville remembered its veterans
and marked two important anniversaries
at the annual Memorial Day Parade and
Ceremony on May 30.
Not only did these celebrations mark
the city’s Bicentennial year, but also the
150th anniversary of the Civil War. The
parade began around 11 a.m., kicking
off from City Hall and continuing along
routes 21 and 82, ending at the Highland
Drive Cemetery, where a memorial ceremony
took place. The parade included
the Brecksville-Broadview Heights High
School Marching Band, many local Boy
and Girl Scout troops, a group of American
Revolution re-enactors and more.
Mayor Jerry Hruby led the memorial
ceremony, stating that it was a special
day and that this year’s crowd was larger
than usual.
“Today is the largest crowd I can remember
at the Memorial Day Ceremony
since I’ve been leading them,” he said.
“Today we reflect on those who gave their
lives to protect our freedom. 150 years
ago, many left their homes to fight in the
Civil War, for a union that was divided yet
united by that war. Brecksville sent 100
soldiers to fight in it, nearly half of the
voting population at the time.”
The Brecksville Police Honor Guard
raised the American flag, and WWII veterans
Benjamin Jeremiah and Homer Farr
led the Pledge of Allegiance. U.S. Senator
Rob Portman gave the address, noting the
solemnity of the occasion.
“We meet here today on sacred ground,”
he said. “Veterans are buried here from
are 330,000 veterans
in Northeast Ohio
whom we thank today.
We thank them,
not just for their sacrifices,
but to commit
to our promise to
support them.”
After the address
was a Call to Colors
and Roll Call of
Wars, during which
an American flag was
planted around the
base of the flagpole to
represent each war in
America’s history.
Brecksville Police
officer Joseph Grzelak
played a bagpipes solo
of “Amazing Grace,”
and the American
Legion Excelsior Post
196 fired a rifle salute.
In his closing rem
summed up the occasion
and requested
that the thoughts and
prayers of the attendees
be with the veterans
and those who
still serve.
“We pray God does bless America, and
grant glory to our veterans. Today we
