34 Fryday Proceeds Help Feed and Clothe less Fortunate by Kay Kerezy Have you ever had the feeling you should be doing something to help someone, somewhere, somehow, but are not sure what to do, where to go or how to start? Jim Lesnick had that feeling. He said, “For six months I sat in church and kept thinking I can do something.” Then he told his wife, Pat, he thought they could feed the homeless. She soon found herself making 100 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on their kitchen table. The couple took the food downtown and drove around a few blocks before approaching people. Pat said, “We aren’t outgoing people; we really didn’t know what we were doing. We said our prayers and found our way.” Jim said, “I’m typically quiet and shy so I said, ‘Pat, see what you can do.’ It took about 10 minutes to give 100 sandwiches away. I wanted to give fresh milk and orange juice too because I always try to give food I would eat or feed to my family.” Pat said, “Within a few weeks we knew we couldn’t do this ourselves.” They approached Father Riebe and the rest is history. Photos by K. Kerezy fortunate. With donations of food and finances, and a dedicated team of volunteers, they donate 600 sandwiches and milk every week to the 2100 Lakeside Men’s Emergency Shelter. Jim also makes stew to accompany the peanut butter and bologna sandwiches, and Heinen’s donates bakery. The shelter is run by the Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry (LMM). Pat said, “We’ve gotten close to some of the people we’ve helped. The LMM helps them get into programs where they find housing and jobs. Sometimes they tell us they’re moving on and you know you’ve helped them.” The Lesnicks will be married 39 years this year and have been working at their business, side by side, for 38 years. slides and video to DVDs. Working with churches, they discovered the needs of the community, which gave them the idea for the food and clothing ministries. The clothing ministry started about 15 years ago. Pat said, “My mom died and we started giving away her stuff.” She then discovered that the Parma Hunger Center, operating out of the Parma Lutheran Church, gave away clothing to those in need. She continued, “Twelve years ago they gave us a room. We have clothing racks and volunteers help people find the right clothes. It makes the experience like a shopping experience.” Groups like the Red Cross sometimes ask for clothing in the event of an emergency, such as a fire. To help fund the food ministry, St. Joseph’s has a fish fry the first Friday of every month. Pat is in charge of outreach and operates the dinner that Jim has dubbed “Fryday Fish Fry.” The volunteers that help prepare, serve and clean up the dinners range in age from 60 to 90. Pat said, “We couldn’t do this if it wasn’t for the great volunteers. We also couldn’t do this without Father Riebe supporting the programs.” Attendance at the dinners averages over 250 people. “We have a good Fryday Fish Fry base,” Pat said. “Some people have even brought cakes to celebrate birthdays.” At last month’s dinner, a table of diners brought cards and played cards after dinner while others purchased their food to go. The Fryday Fish Fries are held the first Friday of every month at St. Joseph Byzantine Catholic Church, 8700 Brecksville Rd. Dinner is served from 4 until 6:30 p.m. Options for a main dish include fried walleye, krabby kakes, pierogies, baked scrod or shrimp. Side dishes include a choice of baked potato, sweet potato, macaroni and cheese, french fries, potatoes au gratin, applesauce or coleslaw. Bread, butter and coffee are included. Dinners start at $7 and desserts can be purchased separately for $1. In addition to the profit from the dinners, over the years, individuals and companies have donated food and money, which helped to keep the ministry afloat.
