boys’ Track
Several members of the boys’ track team
qualified for the state regional track meet.
Junior Rob Scanlon finished 10th overall
in the state in the 3,200 run with a time
of 9:47.55; he also qualified for the meet
with the 4-by-400 meter relay team. Scanlon
is one of Brecksville’s top 10 fastest
runners of all time. Also qualifying for
the state championship meet were senior
Andrew Voepel in the pole vault, senior
Austin Stephan in the 400-meter dash,
David Ryland Jr. in the 1,600 run.
Academically, senior Malcom Cole
scored the highest possible score on the
ACT (36), and Dan Bonamer, Aaron
Frisco, Austin Stephan and Malcom
Cole have GPA’s over 4.4. Senior Jake
Laheta, a long-distance runner in the
3200-meter event, is going to the Air
Force Academy.
Plenty of experience will return for Jeff
Black’s squad in 2012, as all the throwers,
sprinters and high- and long-jumpers will
be back.
Softball
The Bees finished their season at 14-11
before losing, 4-1, in the opening round
of the district tournament on May 12 to
Medina. They were led by senior pitcher
Alex Radjen and senior Becky Malaga,
who hit over 0.300 for the season. Both
seniors will continue their softball careers
at the collegiate level, with Malaga attending
Cleveland State University and
Radjen attending Mercyhurst College in
Erie, Penn.
baseball
One of the main goals of the Bee baseball
team was to win the Southwestern
Conference – and they did so with a
10-4 conference record. A highlight of
conference play was a come-from-behind
victory against Westlake when junior
outfielder Jack Rose hit a walk-off single
to win the game.
A pair of seniors, Jeff Gennaro and Mike
Mancuso, was the pitching and batting
leaders for Brecksville this season. “Jeff
Gennaro did a tremendous job defensively
for us behind the plate as well as
working with our pitching staff,” Coach
John Mutch said. Gennaro also led the
team with a 0.420 batting average. Mike
Mancuso anchored the pitching staff with
a 3-1 record and had 40 strikeouts during
the season.
Mutch believes the 2012 Bees will be
young and inexperienced, but he said the
enthusiasm of the younger players will
make up for the lack of inexperience.
boys’ Tennis
Even though the program has graduated
numerous top performers over the
past two years, the Bees still finished
second in the Southwestern Conference.
The doubles team of Matt Dietrich and
Matt Lionetti qualified for the district
championships.
Coach Dan Reynolds said that the four
seniors on his teams were great leaders.
“They worked hard to maintain the consistency
of the program and were excellent
role models for the younger members of
the varsity team and the JV team,” he
said. ∞
Summer Eye Health
and Safety Tips
Summer is a
time to enjoy
the beautiful
weather and
outdoor activities,
but
t h e s e a s o n
also brings
new concerns
for eye health
and safety.
Gardening and Yard Maintenance
Common hazards can include power tools,
sharp branches, and chemicals in fertilizers
and weed killers. For instance, lawn trimmers
injure more than 1500 people each
year. Be sure to wear wrap-around safety
goggles made of polycarbonate material that
can protect you from flying debris and from
chemicals that can splash or blow into your
eyes. Prescription “dress” glasses cannot
provide the protection you need. Also, wear
a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses providing
100% protection from ultraviolet light.
Sports and Recreation
Approximately 40,000 sports injuries occur
each year, many of them resulting in
permanent vision loss. Ninety percent of
these injuries are preventable if the correct
protective eyewear is worn. Baseball
accounts for the largest number of injuries
to young athletes. Players should wear a
protective helmet with a polycarbonate
facemask or wire shield.
Allergies
Pollens from grass, trees and flowers can
trigger ocular allergy symptoms which
include itchy, red, burning, watery eyes.
If your eyes are affected, try not to rub
them. This can make the irritation worse
and increase the risk of infection. Also,
we do not recommend over the counter
allergy eye drops as they can further aggravate
the condition. You can try artificial
tears, which may wash away the offending
allergan. If this does not provide relief,
prescription allergy eyedrops are available
as well as oral allergy medications.
