boys’ volleyball Alumni Match Primes Team for Regionals
Boys’ volleyball
is alive and
well at Brecksville-Broadview
Heights High
School. Since
the inception of
the club sport in
1992, over 150
boys have had
the experience
of competing in
volleyball against
other high
schools in the
northern Ohio
area.
On May 19, 16
volleyball alumni
assembled to celebrate
19 years of
boys’ volleyball.
The alumni welcomed
the opportunity to help prepare
the 2011 varsity boys’ volleyball team for
its regional final match against St. Ignatius
on May 21.
The 1990’s Alumni and the Millenium

the current varsity and junior varsity teams

before playing the featured match against
each other. To highlight the evening, Ed
Crann, Ben Gorris, Mike Mewhinney and
Gary Ostkar were honored as “coaches
from the past.”
BBHHS boys’ volleyball boasts the

area. Not only has it influenced volleyball
in northeast Ohio, but its alumni have
compiled an astounding list of accomplishments
in the sport: a Division I volleyball
player at the University of Findlay; many
participating in college club volleyball and
competitive adult leagues; two certified
high school/college volleyball officials; one
president of Boy’s Volleyball Ohio North
Region (2001); one Junior Olympic Club
director; and five volleyball coaches at the
high school and NCAA levels.
The 2011 boys’ volleyball varsity team,
led by Coach Dino Pietromica, finished its
season as North Region runner-up with a
16-8 record. Several of its current varsity
players also participate in Junior Olympics
volleyball and will compete this June in
nationals in Orlando, Fla. ∞
