He also killed his 5-year-old daughter by stabbing her 34 times in theback and chest and his 4-year-old son by stabbing him 18 times in the back,chest, and abdomen. He then went to the nursery and stabbed his 4-month-olddaughter 21 times in the back. After these killings, FF stabbed himself 26 timesin the chest and abdomen and cut his wrists. He miraculously survived; aneighbor who had come to take one of the children to school spotted him onthe floor in the kitchen.When evaluated several weeks later, FF was exceptionally depressed and overwhelmedby the act he had just committed. Psychological test findings wereinteresting. Projective figure drawings reflected depression, a poor self-image,and feelings of inferiority, evidenced by tiny figures without any elaboration (seeFigure 6.3). There were suicidal themes on the TAT, with one story about a manwho committed suicide because “he couldn’t handle the problem in his life, aneveryday problem. It was easier to face death. It could be done so quickly. He isgone now and no more problems.” The MMPI indicated major depression,including feelings of weakness and low self-esteem. Two interesting Rorschachperceptions suggest underlying inadequacy extending to the sexual area: “a man’stiny penis” and “two penises that are very small.”FF’s inability to solve the heating problem resurrected long-suppressed conflictsregarding his intellectual competence and lack of a college education.Inability to solve the problem overwhelmed his defenses because he had always
