elationship with his mother who treated him with cruelty accompanied bysexual innuendos. Kemper went on to kill six women, some of whom hedecapitated and cannibalized. He finally killed his mother, cut out her larynx, and threw it in the garbage disposal. Following the matricide, Kemper calledthe police and turned himself in. In many other cases (e.g., Scherl and Mack,1966; Wertham, 1941), adolescents became so enraged at their mothers’sexual indiscretions that matricide resulted. In some young men anger toward their mothers is displaced and becomesan obvious cause for a subsequent sexual attack or murder. For instance,Revitch (1980) reported the case of an 11-year-old boy who made multipleattempts to choke little girls. Under the influence of sodium amytal, herevealed witnessing his mother having sex with various men. This boy wassexually preoccupied and made disparaging remarks about his mother’s conduct.“Choking girls, he said, made him feel glad” (p. 9). Revitch (1980)described another case of a 14-year-old who beat, choked, and stabbed a 10-year-old girl. He expressed dislike for all girls and had a fantasy of his mother’ssexual purity and lack of sexual relations, even with his father.Johnson and Becker (1997) reported the following case: A youngster“recalled his mother being very sexually provocative throughout his youth, exposing herself to him or watching him undress and making erotic comments. His parents once engaged in sexual intercourse in front of him, andhe recalled his mother moaning in what he felt was a haunting and deathlikemanner” (p. 339). At age 14, this youngster began to fantasize abouthaving sexual relations with his mother; the fantasy involved listening to hermoan, killing her, and then engaging in necrophilia. He masturbated abouteight times a day, using his mother’s underwear as a fantasy aid. At age 17,he killed a woman by strangulation and had sex with the corpse for 3 daysfollowing her death. Lauerman (2001) reports an interesting case of a 36-year-old male with Klinefelter’s syndrome who blamed his mother for hisphysically poor sexual development, including undescended testicles. He hadlong-standing urges to damage female genitals and eventually committed asexual homicide by strangulation.10.1.2.3 Pathological Lying and ManipulationLying is a ubiquitous phenomenon. In Ford’s (1996) comprehensive reviewof multiple studies of lying and deceit, he found that about 90% of the generalpopulation admitted to frequent lying, especially about their true feelings, income, accomplishments, sex life, and age; lying was also prevalent in datingrelationships, the workplace, advertisements, politics, and even in science andthe practice of medicine under some circumstances. Therefore, it is not surprisingthat criminals also lie, and do so even more frequently than the generalpopulation. In fact, lying and manipulation are common characteristics of
