“it was the same person.” The first victim was killed because “she took something[drugs] that didn’t belong to her.” The second victim “was a mistake.” He alsoreported that a third woman was abducted from the shopping mall and killedat a nearby reservoir in the same manner. He did not reveal the identity of the“true murderer.”When CC elaborated on his theory, he referred to the fact that the first victimwas Asian, stating, “It was a Vietnam veteran who wanted to kill Orientals.” Hereported that he had met Vietnam veterans in prison who had killed many Asiansand cut their ears off and fashioned necklaces from them. This was his explanationfor the first victim’s having had part of her ear cut off. “She was killedwith a bayonet that a soldier might use.”When asked why the Vietnam veteran killed the second victim, a Caucasian, the offender stated, “Mr. X testified in court that his daughter looked Orientalat night. Possibly the killer, driving a car at night and looking into her car, mistook her for an Oriental.” When asked why “the killer” did not stop whenhe got to the car and discovered that the victim was Caucasian, he responded:“The adrenalin was pumping. He was in too deep. She may have seen the licenseplatenumber. You could get in trouble. So it’s possible he just went throughwith it. How would the guy explain it to the police if he drove the car off andlet her go. He could go to jail for it.” He explained further that the first victimwas killed in a vicious manner, “really butchered all up with a bayonet,” whereasthe second victim “only had four stab wounds.” Therefore, he theorized that thekiller had more anger toward the first victim because she was Asian than towardthe second victim.CC described his obsession with Asian women; he had a collection ofpornographic pictures of Asians, and he said he had over 50 pen pals whowere Asians. He corresponded with them while in prison, having obtainedtheir addresses from the back pages of pornographic magazines. He also saidthat he was a member of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) and the National Associationfor the Advancement of White People. He spoke of his fascination withVietnam atrocities, which he had learned about in prison. He was involvedwith neo-Nazism and corresponded with David Duke, then Grand Wizard ofthe KKK.CC was fairly articulate and had extensive courtroom experience; he handledhimself quite well when cross-examined. For example, to one of theprosecuting attorney’s questions, he replied, “Sir, that’s your opinion. I havea different opinion. You and I can both read the Bible and form differentopinions. Your opinion isn’t necessarily the correct one. It’s just an opinion.I view this much differently.”During the evaluation, CC was pleasant and fairly cooperative, with no symptomsof significant overt mental disturbance. He was superficially friendly, jokedand laughed at times, and complained that the evaluation was a “waste of timebecause my life’s not worth saving.” Although he did not see the point of theevaluation, he cooperated on his attorney’s advice. He indicated that he did notdrink or take drugs and that he was definitely “not crazy.” His intelligence wasaverage (Full Scale IQ = 96) with no evidence of organicity.
