Good neighbours For Sappi Stockstadt, living side by side in good neighbourliness with the local population means communicating with them frankly and honestly, and also implies taking their complaints seriously. Every inquiry or complaint from our neighbours is recorded and dealt with as quickly as possible. Noise and odours are usually the first things neighbours notice about our operations. If a complaint is reported quickly, the factory can react to an incident speedily with countermeasures. With our newspaper “Ihr Nachbar” we regularly keep our neighbours informed about developments of our works and its employees. Occupational safety Our Vision: 0 accidents “We reduce the number of accidents by 50 % each year to come as close as possible to our vision of ‘0 Accidents’!” The management sets ambitious targets for the Stockstadt factory to achieve sustainable progress in occupational safety and health. Last year’s key ratios show that we are on the right track. Project ZERO “Project ZERO”, meaning “0 accidents”, has been adopted throughout the Sappi Group and adapted specially for the Stockstadt mill. This began with a field analysis conducted with the support of the “occupational accident insurance scheme for the raw materials and chemicals industry”. Using the results from this analysis, representatives from the entire mill then worked out the following key working points: • Enhancing safety awareness of all employees throughout the mill in line with the “safety first” approach • Intensifying this work and involving the safety officers • Specifying and publicising positive safety goals After the focus in previous decades had been mostly on technical solutions for improving workplace safety, current efforts are designed to make the employees aware that safety can be a matter of their own conduct. Safetyconscious conduct should be strengthened and unsafe and subconscious actions identified and remedied. Safety audits have been introduced for this purpose. Following personal consultation, specially trained employees conduct an audit in which they observe an employee at his or her usual workplace and the auditor assesses whether the colleague is working safely. At the end of the observing period, the observer immediately gives feedback to the employee. Safe conduct is especially Fall protection exercise praised. These audits often quickly develop into a brief safety discussion between observer and employee about safe and unsafe conduct. “People who talk more about occupational safety also work more safely” – a realisation all employees should be aware of and apply in their daily work.
