Foreword
Dear Readers,

With this new Environmental Declaration of
Sappi Stockstadt GmbH, after three years
we again present you another extensive
report about our successfully accomplished
endeavours on behalf of the environment. In
this issue we report for the first time about
our goals, programmes and environment
data for our Sappi financial year, which
begins in October and ends in September
of the following year. This makes it easier for
us to collect data while still allowing comparisons
with the preceding years because we
always review an entire year as reporting
period.
Sustainability for Sappi is more than merely
ticking off checklists. It is a cornerstone of
our business. We understand sustainability
as protecting and strengthening values over
the long term; and this means far more than
simply being “green”. The issue at stake
here is to do something for people, our
planet and prosperity – to be positive. You
can read more on page 5 about this new
approach adopted at Sappi.
The Stockstadt mill takes up and realises
these positive ideals in all management
areas. One significant environmental project

in the last financial year was enhancing the
efficiency of the pulp sorting and washing
process, which simultaneously implies
considerable energy savings and reduced
waste water pollution. The new plant was
taken into operation in July 2011. The
internal optimisation phase has now been
completed and we expect to achieve our
environmental burden reduction targets for
the ongoing financial year.
Our management fundamental of continual
improvement was very successfully demonstrated
in the area of energy savings. In 2011,
we outperformed our goal of lowering the
mill’s specific energy consumption by
2 % each year since 2007. Numerous
individual measures helped to reduce
specific energy consumption by 3.6 %
compared to 2010. So our target for
financial year 2012 of again achieving a 2 %
reduction compared to the previous year is
certainly ambitious. This and the other
environmental goals we are reporting here
demonstrate our will and resolve to further
develop the Stockstadt location in all areas.
For our employees, our approach of being
positive implies that we concern ourselves
with their well­being, safety and health. We
significantly improved our safety record in
the past financial year and high priority will
again be given in the ongoing financial year
to the “ZERO” project, i.e. zero accidents.
In 2012, we shall continue to vigorously
pursue our ideals jointly with our customers
and in an open and frank dialogue with all
other interested circles, and make our
positive contribution for people, the planet
and our prosperity.
