CHAPTER 1ARMAGEDDONSeptember 11, 2001 dawned as a beautiful morning inNorthern California. We were looking forward to spending anuneventful day and then celebrating our 24 th weddinganniversary together when the phone rang. Our daughter calledand told us to turn on the TV because something awful hadhappened in New York City. We were met with a sight, thatwe, along with millions of fellow Americans, will never forget. The image of the Twin Towers falling has been burned into ourcollective memories as a nation and the horror that we felt willnot soon be forgotten.Terrorism had finally crossed the ocean and come to ourland. We had been warned for years that it was not a questionof “if”, but “when” a terrorist act would hit our great nation. We had watched with disinterested complacency the suicidebombings occurring in the Middle East, never dreaming thatthey would become a reality in our country. But, thepredictions had in fact become true and we were suddenlymaking choices that would not have been acceptable or evenconsidered before 9/11.We had now lost the innocence that we once took for grantedand had been lured into exchanging our freedoms that wefought so hard with our blood to win and then protect, for asecurity that we will never again enjoy. Benjamin Franklinstated correctly that if we give up our freedoms for security wewill have neither freedom nor security.1
