More than just the Ten Commandments hang under these firsttwo commandments. In this statement Jesus said that all the lawhangs under these two commandments. The word law comesfrom the original Greek word nomos which means Mosaic Law ortorah. In fact, nearly every time the word law appears in the NewTestament it comes from nomos. The Mosaic Law is thePentateuch, or the first five books of the Old Testament, whichwere given by God and written by Moses.Each of the statutes in the Mosaic Law can be put under one ofthe Ten Commandments because the statutes further explain thecommandments. The only exceptions are the laws that the Biblespecifically states were eliminated at the cross (more on thisshortly).Here are some specific examples showing how the Mosaic Lawfurther interprets the Ten Commandments. In the Mosaic LawGod gives specific examples as to with whom one is not to havesexual relations. These examples further explain the seventhcommandment “Thou shalt not commit adultery.” All the healthlaws in the Mosaic Law come under the sixth commandment“Thou shalt not kill.” God does not want us to kill ourselvesthrough unhealthy living. Tithing is given in the Mosaic law andit comes under the eighth commandment “Thou shalt not steal.”We are not to steal God’s money from Him. One can go throughthe Mosaic Law and put every statute under one of the TenCommandments, with the exception of those laws that wereeliminated at the cross.7
We can illustrate this principle like this:Statutes further defining the 7 th commandment regardingadultery:a. Do not lie with your daughter-in-law. See Leviticus20:12.b. Homosexuality is condemned. See Leviticus 20:15.Notice that if you break one of the statutes “a” through “d”above, you have in fact broken the seventh commandment thatsays you are not to commit adultery. It is crucial to understandthat the statute that explains the commandment has the same forceof law as the commandment that it further explains. Think of itthis way; the Ten Commandments are chapter titles to God’s Lawand the statutes are the description or further explanation of what isincluded in each commandment. All of the commandments and thestatutes together make up God’s Law.With this information in mind, let us consider what commandmentin God’s law deals with the issue of worship and loyalty. If8
