The Berlin International Film Festival celebrates its 60th
anniversary this year – that is wonderful. But this also means: 52 years
without the Berlinale Talent Campus. From today’s perspective, a
Berlinale without a Campus is hard to imagine. And it’s not because
we’ve got used to the 350 enthusiastic and energetic young filmmakers
around the Potsdamer Platz and the Theater Hebbel am Ufer or
because of the gaping hole the missing seminars and discussions
would leave behind. The prolific interaction between the Festival and
the Campus goes further beyond: the Campus programme is closely
connected to the films, events and highlights of the Berlinale sections
and is therefore completely integrated into the exciting flow of the
Berlin International Film Festival.
In return, former Campus participants give their ideas and
creativity to the Berlinale. Like in 2010: Many of the lovely birthday
greetings from friends around the world, which you can see on the
Berlinale website, have been collected and provided by the Berlinale

needs talents
Talent Campus community. But more importantly: the Official Programme
of the Berlin International Film Festival is enriched year after
year by Campus alumni films. In this anniversary year, we are proud
to present 33 films made with the major involvement of 45 former
Talents in the official Berlinale selection. I cannot think of a better way
for the Berlinale Talent Campus to prove its sustained worth to young
filmmakers and to the Festival.
So, one could say, the Berlinale needs Talents just as cinema
needs talent. The correspondent motto of this year’s Berlinale Talent
Campus is ”Cinema Needs Talent: Looking for the Right People”. This
motto refers to an extremely important moment in filmmaking:
teaming up with the right people. The pleasure of being creative and
the quality of its results are closely connected to the people you are
surrounded by.
And I definitely know what I am talking about. The Berlinale
Talent Campus has developed so perfectly and rapidly over the last
seven years. And that is the sheer result of collaborating with the right
people – be it within its team, the group of its exquisite experts or the
sphere of its true partners and supporters. Our particular gratitude is
extended to all of them for their constant belief in the ambitious idea
of the Berlinale Talent Campus. This year, we are very happy to thank
Bernd Neumann, the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture
and the Media (BKM) as one of our funders, the MEDIA Training
Programme of the European Union and the founding partners
Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and Skillset/UK Film Council. It is
their support that helps us keep this vivacious, creative and worldspanning
community alive.
So look for the right people at this eighth edition of the
Berlinale Talent Campus and come back next year with your joint film
in tow. I wish everybody an exciting and productive Campus week.

Did you ever ask yourself where inspiration comes from?
Neither does it blow in the wind nor is it to be found or ordered online.
Do you remember a moment when you felt inspired by
someone? It was probably a moment when concepts and ideas
started to shuffle in your head, opening up new horizons and
encouraging you to try new avenues you hadn’t thought of before.
It might have happened in a split second. It might also have been the
start of an intense period of sharing work and time with somebody
and experiencing a mutual energy over and over again.
Did you ever ask yourself how you can inspire others? Knowing
what you’re good at and offering it to others is a good start.
Acknowledging that besides your own ideas, the input of others can
enrich and diversify your work helps as well. Sincerity and openness
are the quintessential elements. Inspiration is not something to sit
and wait for. It comes when you don’t expect it and only enters your
consciousness when you allow it to.
The Berlinale Talent Campus 2010 brings together emerging
filmmakers from all over the world, a vibrant group of people sharing
a passion for cinema in all its diversity and richness. We offer you a
platform to enable you to meet others with whom you can share your
ideas and dreams, be surprised and get inspired. And it’s not only
Talents, but also the 150 expert guests who join the Campus this year
to meet the filmmakers who will inspire and be talked about in the
near future.
Over the past years, the Berlinale Talent Campus team has
built an international community of filmmakers who have experienced
this synergy. In 2010, we offer you this opportunity again – in
Berlin, Buenos Aires, Durban, Guadalajara and Sara jevo. Inspiration
strikes every single minute at the Berlinale Talent Campus. We are glad
to join you in that. Feel welcome and share the experience!
