1.2 LOCAL COMPANY & WARMBOUWENLOCAL COMPANYThis research is executed at Local Company, Amsterdam. Local Company is specialized inthe (re)development of sustainable real estate. For the realization of sustainable quality,Local Company focuses on the combination of economical, technical and organizationalaspects.WARMBOUWENAs stated in the introduction, this research focuses on the development of a model thatcan be used to determine and compare the performance of sustainable renovationconcepts. In this research, this model is used to determine the sustainable performanceof “WarmBouwen”. WarmBouwen is a sustainable renovation concept, developed by LocalCompany and KBNG architects. More information about the sustainable renovationconcept WarmBouwen is provided in paragraph 5.1, page 59.The first application of WarmBouwen was at the renovation project of monument „DeTempel‟ in The Hague, the Netherlands. The renovation project „De Tempel‟ is analyzed inthis research by a case study. In this report, the reference „De Tempel‟ refers to thisrenovation project.12
2. RESEARCH DESCRIPTIONThis chapter elaborates the research structure of this thesis. The research structure isbased upon the book of Verschuren en Doorewaard (2005).2.1 PROBLEM DEFINITIONParagraph 1.1, page 8 provides an extensive elaboration of the problem definition of thisresearch. A summary of the problem definition is described below.Although it is clear that renovation is required and has a high potential for CO 2 reductionin the built environment, there is minor scientific knowledge about the aspects thatinfluence the performance of sustainable renovation concepts. Next to that, there isminor scientific knowledge about the relationship between the aspects that influence theperformance of sustainable renovation concepts.Local Company developed the sustainable renovation concept WarmBouwen.WarmBouwen is a potential attractive concept that can be applied for housing renovation.However, the sustainable performance of WarmBouwen is not validated.2.2 RESEARCH GOALThe goal of this research is to develop a performance evaluation model for sustainablerenovation concepts by identifying factors that influence this performance, and byidentifying the contribution and correlation of these factors on the performance ofrenovation concepts. Also, this research identifies factors of influence on the marketimplementation of innovative sustainable renovation concepts.The performance evaluation model will be used to evaluate the performance of threerenovation alternatives, and to analyze the relationship between the factors of influenceon the performance.This research is facilitated by Local Company, Amsterdam. This research provides LocalCompany with a performance evaluation of the innovative sustainable renovation conceptWarmBouwen. Also potential points of improvement for WarmBouwen are derived.13
