2.5 RESEARCH METHODOLOGYThis paragraph describes the research methodology. The research methodologyelaborates the research phases in more detail. This first step is also executedto give more insight in the importance of this research. Information from websites,scientific articles, and scientific reports is used for the definition of the background.In the second step a literature study is executed to explore the concepts of sustainabilityand sustainable renovation of buildings, WarmBouwen, and the implementation ofinnovations. Several search engines like the online library of the University of Twente,Google Scholar, and Science Direct are used to gather scientific information about thesesubjects. Also study books are consulted. The goal of this literature study is to create aclear and comprising overview of the current scientific literature of the involved subjectsin this research. The results of this literature study are provided in chapter 3, page 20.EXPERT INTERVIEWSExpert interviews are executed to gather relevant information about the involvedconcepts of the research. These interviews are executed to contribute to the definition ofthe background of the research and to provide information about the research concepts.In the first phase five experts are interviewed. Two of these experts are developers ofthe WarmBouwen concept. These experts are selected to provide information aboutWarmBouwen, based on their knowledge of the WarmBouwen concept. The other threeexperts are interviewed to define the research background. An analysis of the currentmarket of sustainable energy in the built environment was the basis for the selection ofthese experts. Appendix B provides a list with the selected experts in phase 1.The goal of the interviews in this first phase of the research is to gain more insight in theproblems that play a role at the main research subjects. At the moment of theseinterviews, there was not a clear structure or research topic defined yet. Therefore, a listof important subjects was the basis of these interviews to make sure that the mostimportant subjects were discussed during the interviews.The end result of the first research phase is a structured research design that forms thebasis for the research.15
