Peters<strong>on</strong>, president of<strong>the</strong> supply divisi<strong>on</strong> for Warden’s Office Products,Modesto, Calif., notes that starting at <strong>the</strong> beginningof 2008, Warden’s saw purchases decline as muchas 80 percent from some customers, and those are<strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>es that didn’t close <strong>the</strong>ir doors.“We were hit early and hit hard,” explainsPeters<strong>on</strong>. The five county area that Warden’s servesincluded <strong>the</strong> top two counties in <strong>the</strong> nati<strong>on</strong> forforeclosures. Then gas prices increased. “Peoplewere running out <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir mortgages and many ofour customers started to suffer immensely,” saysPeters<strong>on</strong>. As business began to plummet atmortgage <strong>com</strong>panies, real estate <strong>com</strong>panies,car dealerships, and o<strong>the</strong>r local businesses, <strong>the</strong>irpurchases from Warden’s took a pretty large dipas well.OFF CEL NE21
