3 Dropping the 2β edge angle from 40 o to 20 o had little effect <strong>on</strong> the edge quality ofthe waterst<strong>on</strong>e sharpened blades after leather h<strong>on</strong>ing. Blades sharpened with the 220 gritwheel showed roughly the same increase in edge width as found with the 40 o blades,from around 0.4 to 0.8 micr<strong>on</strong>s.. However, for the 2β edge angles of 20 o , the edgestraightness of 220 grit blades was not as good as for the waterst<strong>on</strong>e blades, with the edgeshowing a small but distinct waviness, see Fig. 37. It seems unlikely that the smallincrease in waviness and maximum radius would have a significant effect <strong>on</strong> cuttingperformance for most applicati<strong>on</strong>s. The edge quality of both blades is very good.31
