for the 220 grit wheel. Honing on the chrome oxide loaded leather wheel was veryeffective at improving the edge quality of blades sharpened on both wheels. After thehoning treatment, the difference in the edge quality of the two blades was much lessapparent.2 The edge view radius of honed blades had an average maximum value of around0.4 µm for the waterstone sharpened wheel as well as the 220 grit Tru Hone sharpenedwheels. This radius increased to around 0.8 µm for the 220 grit Tormek wheel.Occasional fold-over burs are apparent in face views of the 220 grit Tormek blades whichproduce the maximum radius in edge views. Such burs were rarely seen for thewaterstone blades and occasionally seen in the 220 grit Tru Hone blades. The overallquality of the leather honed waterstone ground blades was equivalent to the standardrazor blades of Figs. 7 and 9 in all aspects evaluated here: edge width, edge straightness,edge roughness, and surface smoothness.30
3 Dropping the 2β edge angle from 40 o to 20 o had little effect on the edge quality ofthe waterstone sharpened blades after leather honing. Blades sharpened with the 220 gritwheel showed roughly the same increase in edge width as found with the 40 o blades,from around 0.4 to 0.8 microns.. However, for the 2β edge angles of 20 o , the edgestraightness of 220 grit blades was not as good as for the waterstone blades, with the edgeshowing a small but distinct waviness, see Fig. 37. It seems unlikely that the smallincrease in waviness and maximum radius would have a significant effect on cuttingperformance for most applications. The edge quality of both blades is very good.31
