The VSA system interveneswhen it senses any slip in thewheels, reducing vehicle speed to preventloss of control.Wan’s friend Irwan Nurshah bin Shaharuddinsaid the course taught him towatch the road ahead the next time hegets behind the wheel.“Previously, I only knew how to drive acar. But today I found out that it is importantto keep a safe distance between carsand to look ahead,” Irwan said.Pepper Lim, who attended the eventaccompanied by his younger brotherGinger, said he felt he had gained valuableinsight and had increasedconfidence as a Honda driver afterattending the course.“Putting the cars through skids, spinsand other tough manoeuvres, I was totallyimpressed by Honda's control and handling.The engineers have succeeded increating cars that are easy to drive andfitted them with a bunch of totally awesomesafety features,” said Lim. “The traininginstructors were professional, very knowledgeableand able to demonstrate theirpoints clearly.”Other important safe driving practicesparticipants learned included maintainingan ideal driving position and inspectingtheir vehicle regularly. Vital safety equipment,such as the tyres and brakingsystem, need to be maintained in an optimumworking condition at all timesbecause they are crucial safety elements.Upon successful completion of thecourse, all participants received a certificateof participation from BBDC andHonda Malaysia. Based on feedbackgathered at the course, participants foundit not only an eye-opener but also a thoroughlyenjoyable experience – all in thename of learning safer driving habits.Everyone left the Honda Safety DrivingCourse with a lot more than asimple proof of participation anda fun day out. The Theory and the PracticeAt the Honda Safety Driving Course2008, participants experienceddriving, turning and stoppingduring dangerous conditions withthe following six programs.our newest dreamTheory SessionIn the theory session, BBDC driving instructorsexplain the concepts behind defensivedriving, teaching correct driving know-howand accident prevention techniquesby using illustrative educationmaterials such as props andvideo footage.SlalomIn this test of precision, drivers are required tonavigate around plastic cones placed in a straightline. The objective of this exercise is not tocome in with the fastest time, but rather tocomplete the course as smoothly aspossible. It emphasises ideal drivingthrough steering, body postureand timing.Emergency Manoeuvres:Two and Four Second RulesThe Two and Four Second Rules help preparedrivers for an impending danger a few carlengths ahead. Participants are rated on thetime taken to react and the distance takento bring the car to a complete stop.Wet Braking with ABSThis is the art of emergency braking and lanechanging. Participants are shown how tobrake safely on wet asphalt (recreated usinga slick, soapy plastic mat) at speeds of50km/h while immediately swerving toavoid the obstacle cones.Understeering and VSARecreates real-life traffic situation where a drivermisjudges the cornering speed and ends upgoing off the road. Participants see whatcauses understeering, andlearn how the VSA systemcompensates.Wet Braking without ABSViewed by many participants as the mostexciting part of the course, drivers replicatethe previous braking manoeuvre at 50km/h –but this time without ABS assistance. Lossof control is inevitable, and cars canspin a full 180 degrees or more!*Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) controls tyre slip by monitoring the deceleration of individual wheels while braking, then automatically adjusting hydraulic pressure to maintain optimum driver control.*Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with traction control enhances handling on poor traction surfaces by helping drivers maintain control during acceleration, cornering and collision-avoidance manoeuvres.The Honda Safety Driving Course is Conducted by Honda Malaysia, in collaboration withBukit Batok Driving Centre Ltd (BBDC)One of the most advanced driving centres in South East Asia, the Bukit Batok Driving Centre was established on 15April 1988 and officially opened on 6 April 1990.
