4.0 <str<strong>on</strong>g>Reducing</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Impact <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Fire</str<strong>on</strong>g>Evacuati<strong>on</strong>In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> event <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a fire, people must be able to exit <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> building quickly and safely to prevent <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> loss <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> humanlife. The size, number and locati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se exits are outlined in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> NFBCC.The NFBCC requires that exits are visible and clearly marked. A best management practice recommends <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> use<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> signage and lighting to help people locate <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se exits during a fire.Number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fire exitsThe NFBCC specifies that every farm building have at least two fire exits, at opposite ends <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> building.There is an excepti<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> NFBCC for buildings <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> low human occupancy having less than 200 m 2 (2,150 ft 2 )<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> floor area and used to store bulk crops <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> low combustibility. These buildings may be served by <strong>on</strong>e fire exit.Travel distanceThe NFBCC requires <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> travel distance to an exit in a farm building <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> low human occupancy not exceed 20 m(66 ft) in buildings where more than 100 L <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> liquid fuel is stored, or 45 m (148 ft) in all o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r farm buildings or<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> exits are placed around <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> perimeter <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> building and are not more than 60 m (197 ft) apart, measuredal<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> perimeter.Figure 4.7 and Figure 4.8 show exit locati<strong>on</strong>s in a single and two storey farm building.(B)(E)(F)(E)(A)(H)(G)(D)(C)(I)Figure 4.7.
