REDUCING THE RISK OF FIRE ON YOUR FARM<str<strong>on</strong>g>Fire</str<strong>on</strong>g> exit signagePost permanent signs beside all fire exits in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> building/compartment. Rooms c<strong>on</strong>necting into comm<strong>on</strong>hallways should post signs in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> hallway in fr<strong>on</strong>t <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> doorway, indicating <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> directi<strong>on</strong> to an exit. If usingelectrical signs, ensure <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se signs have a battery backup system to remain lit in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> event <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a power outage.Figure 4.10 shows a properly marked exit.Figure 4.10. Attach handles for ease <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> manipulating <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> panels. Inform staff using <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> facilitythat <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se are available as emergency exits.Mechanical/electrical room exitThese rooms should have a direct exit to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> outside. When a direct exit to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> outside is not possible, c<strong>on</strong>sidera pass-through exit (through ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r room). In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se cases, ensure employees determine <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fire locati<strong>on</strong> beforeentering <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> room, in order to get to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> exit.Obstructi<strong>on</strong>sMake every effort to keep exit paths and exit doors clear <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> obstructi<strong>on</strong>s from equipment, machinery, feed andsimilar items. A daily walk through <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> building will ensure exits and exit paths are unobstructed.40
