Metro ValleyTRAVEL REGIONThe Metro Valley Region <strong>of</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong>is home to the state’s two most populouscities, Charleston, the state capital andHuntington, home to Marshall University.Both metropolitan areas <strong>of</strong>fer a variety <strong>of</strong>cultural activities and dining choices. Thegolf courses in the region are traditionallymaintained and take advantage <strong>of</strong> the rollinghills and waterways throughout.A suburb <strong>of</strong> the capital city, SouthCharleston is home to Little Creek <strong>Golf</strong>Course. Established in 1921, it boasts achallenging 6,096 yard layout, which windsover and around beautiful mountains,demanding a variety <strong>of</strong> shots and placing apremium on accuracy <strong>of</strong>f the tee.The Kanawha County Park & RecreationCommission operates two golf courses in theCharleston area. Big Bend <strong>Golf</strong> Course isan 18-hole championship golf course locatedin Tornado. The county-owned course wasdesigned with every skill level in mind. Thefairways are tree-lined, and water comes intoplay on three holes. Some <strong>of</strong> the greens arelarge and have enough slope to test puttingskills. The Coal River flows alongside part <strong>of</strong>the course and adds to the beautiful scenery.Coonskin Park features the county’s18-hole, par 3 golf course and driving range.This executive course was built on flat terrainamong rolling hillsides. The course is openin places and challenging in others as thetree-lined fairways can be quite tight.There are small, target greens on some holesand mounding throughout. The Elk Riverflows alongside the course on the back nine.The most difficult hole is number 13, a 295-yard, par 4, featuring a dogleg left fairway.The region is also home to the Mardi GrasCasino Resort, conveniently located <strong>of</strong>fInterstate 64 just west <strong>of</strong> Charleston, <strong>of</strong>feringlive greyhound racing, table games and slots.10WWW.WVTOURISM.COM/GOLF
