Hatfield-McCoy MountainsTRAVEL REGIONTwisted Gun <strong>Golf</strong> Course, WharncliffeThe Hatfield-McCoy Mountains Regionis located in the southwestern corner <strong>of</strong><strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> along the Kentucky border. Itsmountainous topography has allowed golfcourse architects to create challenging layouts.It’s this same rolling terrain which has madethis region <strong>of</strong> <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> a mecca <strong>of</strong> sortsfor adrenaline junkies, as home to the wellknownHatfield-McCoy Trails. This is not agolf trail though, this is a system <strong>of</strong> trails forall-terrain vehicles or ATVs. As one <strong>of</strong> thelargest <strong>of</strong>f-highway vehicle trail systems in theworld, Hatfield-McCoy Trails stretch morethan 500 miles and <strong>of</strong>fer something forevery skill level. Trails range from the scenicmountain views <strong>of</strong> Pinnacle Creek, to thetight and twisting trails <strong>of</strong> Bearwallow. Manytrails connect to <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong>'s “ATV friendlytowns” where visitors can grab a bite to eatand experience true Southern hospitality.The region was named for the famous postCivil War decade-long feud between theHatfield and McCoy families. Labor battlesare also part <strong>of</strong> the mountainous region’shistory, with conflict between coal miners andmining companies in the 1920s. With mineslocated throughout, the importance <strong>of</strong> coalfrom a lifestyle and historical perspectivepermeates the region. In fact, the CoalHeritage Museum is located in Madison anda re-enactment <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> those labor disputes,turned bloody battle, is held annually in thesmall town <strong>of</strong> Matewan.The nearby Twisted Gun <strong>Golf</strong> Club inWharncliffe is appropriately known as thejewel <strong>of</strong> the coal fields. This links-style courseis placed on a former mine site in southernMingo county. With forgiving fairways andsmooth greens, the course has four sets <strong>of</strong> tees,playing from 7,015 yards from the backtees to only 5,155 yards from the forwardtees.
