taken within a few hours of exposure, saturates the thyroid gland with stable(non-radioactive) iodine, thus preventing or reducing the amount of radioactiveiodine that might be subsequently taken up by the thyroid.Two pills of Potassium Iodide have been made available for each householdmember, free of charge.In cooperation with the Barnstable County Department of Health and theEnvironment, the Board of Health continued its weekly surveillance of the waterquality of the town’s 12 bathing beaches during the summer months. Of the 119samples analyzed, 4 samples exceeded the bacteriological limits for bathingbeaches, resulting in two sites each being closed for two daysIn 2007 the Orleans Board of Health continued to contract with the BarnstableCounty Department of Health and the Environment for professional services.These additional inspectional services have assisted the Health Department inhandling its workload more efficiently.During 2007 the Board of Health was represented on the Water Advisory Board,Cape Cod Regional Tobacco Control Council, Cape Cod Rabies Task Force,Wastewater Management Steering Committee, Health Agents Coalition, Site PlanReview Committee, and Pleasant Bay Resource Management Plan TechnicalResource Committee. The Board operates underthe criteria set forth by the Massachusetts Board of Building Regulations andStandards and is comprised of professionals from the fields of architecture,engineering, and construction.Record: Residential Appeals - No cases.
