ith the Olympic and Paralympics Games now a fond memory, it is now time to convert the W enthusiasm and excitement created by the Games into school PE and extra-curricular activities. We now have a photo of every Team-GB and Paralymics-GB medal winner displayed in the PE foyer to hopefully inspire our pupils to strive to be the best they can be. Paralympic Taster Day – In September, I took 2 year 8 pupils to Loughborough University for a Paralympic Taster Day. This day had been set up to introduce pupils with physical disabilities to alternative sports which they may not have tried. Both boys thoroughly enjoyed their day learning new activities including table tennis, boccia, poly-bat and wheelchair basketball! Loughborough University Links and our Olympic/Paralympic Legacy – as well as the above trip, Mrs Edwards also took 2 pupils to a day’s conference at Loughborough University in July. Headteachers from across Leicestershire and the City of Leicester attended along with 2 pupils from each of their schools. They went to presentations and workshops and had a tour of the brilliant sports facilities. Most of the extra curricular activities listed below have been planned as a result of our pupils’ suggestions from this day, so we are very grateful for their input. Girls’ Active Lifestyle Sessions – The GALS initiative has been running for the past 2 years at KHS. This scheme is being run across all high and upper schools within Blaby and Harborough with the aim of giving girls opportunities to try activities which we do not offer within curriculum time. These activities are often fitness style classes lead by coaches and instructors from the local community. Linking with instructors in this way means that if girls enjoy a particular session, they are able to continue that activity outside of school. Starting after half term, selected year 8 girls will experience new activities including Zumba, Pilates, Skipping, Ultimate, Cheerleading, Karate and Street Dance. Young Leaders – Unfortunately the miserable weather at the end of last term led to the cancellation of all of the primary school sports days that our leaders were due to attend. Starting after half term, our year 9 Young Leaders will be running a series of lunchtime table tennis and pool sessions which will initially be offered to year 7 pupils. As table tennis is a new activity to many of the year 9 pupils, we recently had a local coach deliver a session to teach the leaders the basics. Y7 Boys’ Tennis – We have now had 4 successful lunchtime sessions of year 7 boys’ tennis which is being run in collaboration with Kibworth Tennis Club. As there was a much larger demand than expected, we have now set up an after school session on a Wednesday for year 7 boys who are beginners or have not played much tennis before. Letters were given to pupils on Wednesday 17 th October and places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. YEAR 7 After lots of trials in the first 3 weeks of term, the following boys were successful in being selected for the Year 7 Boys Football Squad:- Ethan Dawe, Ollie Lewis, Charlie Wollerson (Capt), James Wyche, Joey Caravelli, Harry Allen, Freddie Robinson, Harry Pounds, Tim Gormon-Powell, Isaac Lakin, Joel Busby-Powell, Harry Jones, Ollie Gilbert, Jake Fromont, Fraser Williams So far this is their record:- Played 4 Won 4 Scored 31 Conceded 2 It has been a fantastic start to the season for the Year 7 squad, unbeaten in their first 4 matches. Three South Leicestershire League matches have seen them beat South Wigston 10-0, Bushloe 8-1 and Gartree 4-1. In the second round of the National Cup having been given a bye in round 1they travelled to Coventry and beat Bishop Ullathorne Catholic College 9-0. After half term they have 2 South Leicester League matches at home to Thomas Estley (Broughton Astley) and away to Welland Park. Also in the 2nd round of the County Cup they will play Uppingham College at home and we are waiting to see their opponents in the 3rd round of the National Cup. Mr Murphy and I, who have both seen a lot of very good teams pass through Kibworth, are very excited about the potential that this team has shown already and they can only get better......
