General Technical Information / QUALITY SYSTEMCleaning of electrolytic capacitorsCleaning of electrolytic capacitorsAluminium electrolytic capacitors aresusceptible to damage by certain typesof cleaning solvents. Cleaning solventsthat contain halogenated hydrocarbonsespecially chlorinated hydrocarbonsare generally not recommended. Thesolvents can diffuse through the seal intothe capacitor, and are then convertedelectro-chemically to free chlorides, whichcan cause corrosion. This can result in apressure build-up that can destroy thecapacitor.Cleaning solvents that can be usedwithout precautions1) Cleaning solvents such as alcohols (e.g.isopropanol, methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, orbuthyl alcohol), glycol ethers (e.g. methylglycol)or ethylacetate are recommended.2) If the other components on the circuitboard are washable with water, water witha mild detergent is recommended as themildest cleaning solvent. However, thisprocedure should be followed by immediatedrying in hot air +85°C for 5–10 min.to avoid hydroxide precipitation on thesurface of the can.Halogenated Hydrocarbons containCFC’s and as such are ozone depletingchemicals (ODC’s). It is not recommendedthat they are used as cleaning solvents.
