ENVIRONMENT & PRODUCT SAFETYPRODUCT SAFETYFUMIGATION continuedIf aluminium electrolytic capacitorsbecome exposed to methyl bromide thencorrosion may occur depending upon theconcentration and exposure time to thechemical.This failure mode can affect all types ofEvox Rifa / BHC aluminium electrolyticcapacitors. Methyl bromide can penetratethe seals of aluminium electrolyticcapacitors and cause internal corrosionof the anode connection resulting in thecomponent becoming open circuit. Therate of corrosion will depend upon thelevel of exposure to methyl bromide andalso the subsequent operating conditionssuch as voltage and temperature. It maytake months, or in some cases severalyears, before the component becomesopen circuit.9. DIELECTRIC ABSORPTIONA phenomenon known as dielectricabsorption can cause aluminium electrolyticcapacitors to re-charge themselves. Thephenomenon is well known but impossibleto predict with any great accuracy and sopotentially any electrolytic product could beaffected. Thus, a capacitor, which has beencharged and then completely discharged,will appear to re-charge itself, if left opencircuit and this will manifest itself as asmall voltage across the terminals of thecapacitor. Generally the voltages seen areless than 20Vdc, however higher voltageshave on occasion been reported.In order to avoid any problems caused bythis voltage Evox Rifa / BHC recommendsthat capacitors be discharged beforeconnecting to the terminals.FlammabilityMost plastics and elastomers arecombustible i.e. will ignite if an ignitionsource is applied under suitable conditionsof temperature and oxygen level.For most published data, the UL 94Horizontal and Vertical Burning systemhas been applied. Although useful forcomparative values, this test is notpracticable, as the ingnition characteristicsare strongly influenced by the materialdimensions, and other materials with whichthey may be in intimate contact.The electrolytic capacitors manufacturedand Evox Rifa Group withstand the firehazard test according to IEC 60695-2-2 with a 30s flame exposure and therequirement to be self retardant within10s.The electrolytes used are not classified asflammable according to ASTM (AmericanSociety for Testing amd Materials.
