Learning Outcomes: Competences1. IntroductionIn the context of the Bologna Declaration and the Prague Communiqué,the creation of the European Education Area responds to anumber of opportunities and needs which are very relevant forEuropean society in general and for Higher Education in particular.Among the more pressing needs, there: deepening the cooperationamong the European Higher Education Institutions, with all thepotential this holds; increasing the competitive edge of Europe in termsof Higher Education, particularly with a clearer and consistent pictureof educational systems and the need to create the setting for the freemobility of professionals at the European level.One of the expressions in the Declaration which refers to these needsis the development of easily readable and compatible degrees. TheTuning project considers that degrees would be comparable andcompatible if what the degree holders are able to perform is comparableand if their academic and professional profiles are also comparable.Comparability differs from homogeneity and, referring to academicand professional profiles, it is clear that diversity is not a draw back but anasset. The definition of professional profiles relates to the needs of societyand social needs and demands are very varied. Hence consultation withsocial groups and the requests of professional bodies at either local,national or international level (in accordance to the aims of the degree)need to be taken into consideration.
