<strong>AQAR</strong> <strong>2005</strong>-<strong>2006</strong>, MADRAS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE, CHENNAIANNUAL QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT<strong>2005</strong>-<strong>2006</strong>The focus area for quality enhancement at <strong>Madras</strong> <strong>Christian</strong> <strong>College</strong> for the academicyear <strong>2005</strong>-06 was on industry-institution interface, encouraging extracurricular andextramural activities of students, introducing innovative and job orientedprogrammes. A plan of action was evolved and strategies were drawn based onfeedback from stakeholders and taking into consideration the valuable suggestionsgiven by the NAAC peer team during the accreditation process. The action taken onthe above areas are briefly presented herewith.Bell Tower1


<strong>AQAR</strong> <strong>2005</strong>-<strong>2006</strong>, MADRAS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE, CHENNAIPart APlan of Action:Industry-institution interface to ensure employability ofstudents and thus contribute to national developmentOutcome:Funding agencies were identified and project proposals were submitted to nationaland international agencies such as University Grants Commission, Department ofScience and Technology, Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Environment andForests and United Board for <strong>Christian</strong> Higher Education in Asia. During the year<strong>2005</strong>-06, there has been a steady increase in the consultancy services offered toindustries, foreign universities and colleges, Government and non-governmentalorganizations, thereby providing internships and training to students.Plan of Action:Encourage extracurricular and extramural activities ofstudents to give a comprehensive educational experienceand thus improve global competencies among them.Outcome:Sports: Our students represented the University of <strong>Madras</strong> in various sports activitiesand brought laurels in games such as Volley Ball, Cricket, Ball-Badminton, Athletics,Kho-Kho, etc. Students were also actively involved in both national and internationalyouth festivals.Cultural: The <strong>College</strong> Union Society and all the halls conducted a number of culturalprogrammes.Co-curricular Activities: The Department Associations spearheaded a number ofstudent activities. The Student <strong>Christian</strong> Movement involved students in <strong>Christian</strong>activities and outreach programmes. NSS and NCC have been very active.Plan of Action:Introduce innovative and job oriented programmes.Outcome:Four new programmes were started in this academic year, of which three were at theUG level (Social Work, Journalism, Geography, Tourism & Travel Management) andone at the PG level (Applied Microbiology).2

Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the institution:Academic excellence, social relevance and spiritual vitality are the importantelements of the educational experience offered at <strong>Madras</strong> <strong>Christian</strong> <strong>College</strong>. Variousactivities organized during the academic year <strong>2005</strong>-06 reflect how the college isanchored to its mission and how the goals are set to fulfill them.a. Academic Excellence:• Apart from innovations in the focus area of teaching and learning, research andconsultancy were given adequate emphasis during this academic year.• Opportunities for international student exchange programmes enabled students toearn credits from educational institutions abroad and transfer the same to MCCfor award of degree.• International programmes were organized by the college to enable students andfaculty from other universities to come to MCC for study and/or to do research.• Innovation in the curriculum with the introduction of the Choice Based CreditSystem enabled students to benefit from the Interdisciplinary and General Coursesthat give a broader knowledge base apart from that given by their major course.They also have the freedom to choose the courses.• Continuous Assessment Tests and the innovative methods like seminars,assignments, and power point presentation helped students to perform better intheir overall educational pursuits.• Value based learning and Personality Development Programmes offered for theunder graduate students provided an overall development for students andenhanced their employability.b. Social Relevance:• The National Service Scheme of the <strong>College</strong> organized various activities likeblood donation camp, cleaning of campus, issue of Drivers’ Learning License forstaff and students by the Tambaram RTO etc.3


<strong>AQAR</strong> <strong>2005</strong>-<strong>2006</strong>, MADRAS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE, CHENNAI• Service-Learning Programme is introduced to ensure that academic learning islinked to social needs.• Departments have carried out academics along with Community Developmentprogrammes through the extension units of the college.• Incorporating community development activities as part of the degree programunder the Choice Based Credit System has motivated students to engage incommunity services.c. Spiritual Vitality:• Retreats organized at the beginning of the academic year for the faculty andstudents have helped the members of the college community to focus theirattention on realizing the goals and objectives of the college.• Staff Study Circle organized monthly meetings that helped faculty to engage ininterfaith dialogue and develop religious tolerance. The study circle also gave anopportunity to reflect on the relevance of <strong>Christian</strong> values in the field of highereducation.• Staff Student Retreat conducted annually aims at generating constructive nonacademicinteractions between staff and students.• The <strong>Christian</strong> ethos of the <strong>College</strong> was reflected in the various activities of theStudent <strong>Christian</strong> Movement. Members of this unit organized programmes to trainthe student community in <strong>Christian</strong> values and extended their activities tocommunity development in the Tambaram neighbourhood2. New academic programmes initiated by the college (UG & PG):• Bachelor’s programme in Social Work (BSW) was started in the self-inancedstream during the current academic year. Students evinced great interest in thiscourse due to the prospects of pursuing Masters Programme in Social Work(MSW) which is offered in both the aided and the self-financed Stream.• Bachelor’s programme in Journalism is introduced from this academic year. ThePG Diploma course in Journalism offered by MCC School of ContinuingEducation has been very successful over the years and the same interest andenthusiasm are shown by students for the new degree programme.4


<strong>AQAR</strong> <strong>2005</strong>-<strong>2006</strong>, MADRAS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE, CHENNAI• Bachelor’s programme in Geography, Tourism & Travel Management is anotherinnovative course offered from the current academic year in SFS. This highlysought after course has attracted a large number of students due to the jobopportunities available in the Travel and Tourism Industry.• Master’s programme in Applied Microbiology in SFS was introduced during thisacademic year. The course has attracted a large number of students owing toemployability and research prospects of the course.3. Innovations in curricular design and transaction:A number of innovations were incorporated in the curriculum during the currentacademic year. The Academic Council meetings held on 10 June <strong>2005</strong> and 05 April<strong>2006</strong> approved these suggestions.• The Department of English made major changes in the title and content of variouscourses offered and new textbooks were prescribed for study and reference.Reflecting the commitment of the college community to the protection of theenvironment and sustainable livelihood, a new paper entitled ‘Ecoliterature’ wasintroduced this year.• The Department of Tamil brought in relevant changes in the course content underPart-I Tamil offered to students of B.A./B.Sc./B.Com/BCA/BBA under theChoice Based Credit System.• The Department of Commerce made major changes in the curriculum and alsointroduced a new course on ‘Brand Management’. SPSS has become an integralpart of the course in Computer Programming for PG students. The course on‘Auditing and Entrepreneurial Development’ was restructured with a new coursecontent.• The Department of Physics introduced many innovative courses. Forundergraduate students ‘Energy Physics’ is offered as an elective course and‘Astrophysics’ is offered as an interdisciplinary course. A course on ‘NuclearReactor Physics’ is offered to postgraduate students in addition to the courses onSolid State Physics and Nuclear Physics which will enhance the quality of theprogram.5


<strong>AQAR</strong> <strong>2005</strong>-<strong>2006</strong>, MADRAS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE, CHENNAI• The Department of Botany decided to change the name of the PG degreeprogramme from ‘Botany’ to ‘Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology’ with effectfrom the academic year <strong>2006</strong>-07. This change is accompanied by restructuring ofthe course content that include introduction of more elective courses.• The Department of Computer Science offered two optional allied courses to UGstudents of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Introduction to Programming isoffered in the III semester, and Object-Oriented Programming and Data Structureare offered in the IV semester.• The Department of Physics in the Self Financed Stream brought in changes in thecourse content, especially in the electronics related papers. Restructuring wasdone in two papers including Electronic Circuits and Communication and Digitaland Analog Circuits. Some of the new papers introduced in the current academicyear include Microprocessors and its applications and a Computer Training –Programming in C. These changes were made keeping in mind the revision in thesyllabus of the Higher Secondary school curriculum.• The Department of Communication introduced new courses in Travel Journalism,Ad-Photography, Event Management, Basic Design and Layout, Web Publishingand Film Appreciation and Criticism. There was a thorough revision of thecontent of the paper with the inclusion of new topics like Introduction toCommunication, Electronic Media, Communication Skills, Audio-visualProduction–I and II, Online Journalism, Communication Research Methodology,Critical Media Studies, Advertising Photography and Introduction to Film Studies.• The Department of Chemistry introduced Service-Learning programmes inRestoration of Pond Eco-system and Food Adulteration. Service-learning is aprocess by which the students apply their classroom learning to the needs of thecommunity and through reflection learn more concepts from real life situations.• The UGC Sponsored Career Oriented Programmes that were approved in theAcademic Council in April <strong>2005</strong> were implemented this academic year in theAided Stream. ‘Professional Pharmaceutical Salesmanship’ offered by theDepartment of Chemistry, ‘Medicinal Plant and Tissue Culture’ offered by theDepartment of Botany and ‘Vermiculture’ offered by the Department of Zoologycommenced from the academic year <strong>2005</strong>-06.6

Examination reforms implemented:Candidates are able to get their results published online since 2003. In addition, thefollowing recommendations were made by the Examinations Committee in February<strong>2005</strong> and accepted by the Academic Council in November <strong>2005</strong>:• The difference between the I and II valuations in the End of SemesterExaminations is now raised to 15% from the existing 10% for purposes ofreconciliation of the two valuations in the award of marks in the relevant answerpaper.• The average of the mark awarded in the third valuation and the mark (in the I andII valuations) nearest to the third valuation mark is to be taken as the final awardof mark in the relevant paper instead of the existing method of taking the thirdvaluation as the final mark.Computerization of administration and the process of admissions andexamination results, issue of certificates:• Student data is computerized for easy and quick access to all data pertaining tostudents in the Admissions office, Records office and Examinations office.• Parents are intimated about the student’s progress and attendance on a regularbasis and they can meet the Deans to clarify their queries.• The Student Profile is computerized so as to get details without delay.6. Candidates qualified for NET/SLET/GATE etc:As on date the college does not have a record of these data. However, many studentsappear for these examinations and qualify.8

Initiative towards faculty development programmme:Identifying the potentials of the teaching faculty and giving them every opportunity toenhance them gets high priority in the educational philosophy of the <strong>College</strong>. Community services and other support services:Sensitivity to the needs of the society, spontaneous involvement in the life of theneighborhood community and taking an uncompromising stand for the sociallyunderprivileged have been the hallmark of the college community right from itsinception. Some of the pioneering areas of social involvement were providingremediation to under-achievers in neighbouring schools (RSL) by the members of theNational Service Scheme; providing voluntary medical and paramedical assistance tovillagers by SCM and providing service to the visually challenged by the Students’Service for the Blind.23

National Service Scheme, NCC,Student <strong>Christian</strong> Movement, Scrub Society, Student Service for the Blind andvarious other units of the college did yeoman service to the welfare of the campuscommunity and the neighborhood community. Mr. Sathoshi Nakano of Japan has donated a Braille label makerto SSB.• As SSB is celebrating its golden Jubilee year, a meeting of the visually challengedalumni and releasing of a souvenir have been planned for the end of this academicyear.COLLEGE UNION SOCIETY• The activities of the <strong>College</strong> Union Society were inaugurated by Mr. SashiKumar, a popular alumnus of the college.• ‘MCC- Marching towards a Cleaner Environment’, a programme launched withthe involvement of students and staff of this <strong>College</strong>, was geared towardsimproving the present status of the environment on campus. MCC has designed asustainable garbage disposal system, whereby the bio-degradable and non-biodegradablewastes are segregated at source and collected in appropriate binsmeant for that purpose which are periodically cleared. While the non biodegradableplastic wastes are sent for recycling, the biodegradable wastes arecollected in jute bags, which are biodegradable, and dumped in large pits oncampus. The possibilities of converting ‘waste to wealth’ throughvermicomposting and other technologies are being envisaged by the college.DR. Activities and support from the Parent-Teacher association:• Parent-Teacher Association is not formally structured. It is mandatory that allparents be present for the orientation programme conducted immediately after thecollege reopens every academic year. This has enabled the college to have regular contact with parents.• The Dean of Student Affairs periodically contacts students, parents based onacademic progress and disciplinary aspects. Placement services provided to students:Realizing the need and also as a mandatory requirement, an exclusive placement cellwas formed to enhance the employability of our students.
