Another month has flown by. I hope everyone hasrecovered from the nationals and are back into full training.I’d like to congratulate everyone that competed in theAustralian Running Festival, 12-13 April; it was a perfectweekend to run some long distances. I’d like to thank theteam of ACTVAC members that manned one of the waterstations during the marathon, your efforts were wellappreciated from all reports. It has been a month of highs and lows. The biggest lowwas the massive loss of Greg Gilbert, who passed awaysuddenly on 16 April. He will be greatly missed by theathletics community in the ACT. I am very grateful, as I’msure many of you are, for all the years of hard work thatGreg contributed to our sport.I recently received some great news for Athletics ACT,though not so good for ACTVAC. Neil Boden has been electedas President of Athletics ACT, and will be standing downfrom his many roles with ACTVAC. His significantinvolvement will be greatly missed by everyone at ACTVACand his shoes will be very hard to fill. His wealth ofknowledge on track and field will be missed at our Thursdaynight track and field meetings. Nevertheless, I wish himevery success as President of Athletics ACT.On a personal note, I’d like to thank all those who havewelcomed and supported me since I took on the ACTVACPresidency in June 2012. I feel very privileged to have takenover as president of such a strong athletics club, a legacy putin place by all the people that have ever served on anyACTVAC committee in the history of this great club. Withoutthese people we wouldn’t have the amazing club that wehave today, their hard work is responsible for starting andbuilding the club. We now have the job of strengthening theclub and ensuring it continues to grow and evolves into oneof the great masters athletics clubs in Australia. It would bewonderful to see some new faces on the ACTVAC Committeeor any one of the sub-committees to allow some of our hardworkers a bit of a break.I would also like to thank some of the clubs unsungheroes, the members of the ACTVAC Committee: VicePresident Jan Banens, Secretary Paul Archer, TreasurerNick Blackaby, Minutes Secretary Cory Collins, Fran Harris,Craig Wisdom, Kathy Sims, Mick Saunders, Rachelle Ellis-Brownlee. These people have put in long hours and attendedsome long meetings to keep this club running.I look forward to catching up with you all soon,Brett KingstonPresidentJune 2013 Vetrunner — Page 3PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEVale Greg Gilbert Cont...(Continued from page 1)Being on such spread out fields, without containmentfencing it could possibly have been a disaster. But it was agreat success and at the end of the day Greg was happy andsmiling and simply said “We did it”. This memory is soprecious to me. Our schools community will sorely miss him.Greg was also a coach and strong supporter of athleteswith a disability. At interclub he would be seen officiating atmany of their events: measuring, adjusting seats, returningequipment, recording and always ensuring they receivedquality officialdom. He spent many hours training officialsand volunteers to become effective tie down crews.A highlight of his athletic life must surely have been hisinvolvement with the Sydney 2000 Olympics andParalympics. On our local scene Greg was very involved over Easterwhen the ACT Vets conducted the Australian MastersAthletic Championships. Each day he would be workingtirelessly on the field. He related well to Masters Athletes, understanding their passions for their sport and theirendeavours to compete.ACT VETERANS ATHLETIC CLUB “Fitness Through Fellowship”The Vetrunner is the official Newsletter of ACTVAC Inc, ISSN 1449-8006Postal Address: GPO Box 2356, Canberra, ACT 2601.
