In 2003 Lancewas given a pacemaker <strong>and</strong> four years later completed hisfirst marathon. Last June, now an M40, Lance received anew pacemaker.Despite his medical h<strong>and</strong>icap Lance has completed sixmarathons, two Ironman triathlons, many half marathons<strong>and</strong> numerous other long distance road races. Since 2009 hehas been a regular participant in local veterans’ track <strong>and</strong>field where he competes in all races of 800m <strong>and</strong> longer.Throughout the current season he demonstratedremarkable improvement <strong>and</strong> frequently ran PBs. Ahighlight was finishing third in the Higgins Memorial800m H<strong>and</strong>icap in December.However, apart from his exploits on the track, Lanceenjoyed a wonderful year on the road. He was the M40silver medalist in the ACT Vets’ Half Marathon in the timeof 82.24 – the 10 th highest age graded performance in theevent. He was 31 st in the annual 10km Canberra TimesFun Run (36.38).But the highlight of the year was being one of 25 ‘GlobalThe Audun Fristad Award for Athletic Excellenceacknowledges our most outst<strong>and</strong>ing men <strong>and</strong> women intrack <strong>and</strong> field. <strong>Recipients</strong> will have achieved exceptionally highst<strong>and</strong>ards in their chosen event/s <strong>and</strong> have beenregular participants at our Thursday night meets (atleast at half of the designated meets)The top three males <strong>and</strong> top three females receiveawards. Certificates of Excellence may be awardedto other contendersPerformances achieved in any official competitionfrom the day after the last AMA Track <strong>and</strong> FieldChampionships to the last day of the current year’sAMA ChampionshipsThe athlete’s best performance in each event iscompared to results achieved in the most recentoutdoor World Masters Athletics Championships.CERTIFICATES of EXCELLENCEWOMEN – ALEX LLOYD W55: Alex is a talented allrounderwho made a successful return to track <strong>and</strong> fieldafter several years lay-off. Alex performed well in thepentathlon <strong>and</strong> made the final of our ‘Gift’. Her bestperformances in high <strong>and</strong> long jump were as good as fourth<strong>and</strong> fifth place at the World Championships. Herperformances in javelin, 400m <strong>and</strong> triple jump also rankedhighly.MEN – PHIL WHITE M55: Phil’s best time in the2013 Fristad AwardsJune 2013 Vetrunner — Page 5Heroes’ from 10 countries invited to participate in theMedronic Twin Cities Marathon in Minneapolis, USA inOctober. All 25 ‘Global Heroes’ were selected because theirlives were dependant on medical devices. Lance was one of11, <strong>and</strong> the only Australian, to tackle the marathon whilethe others ran the 10 mile event. He completed themarathon in 2:56.48 (a huge PB) finishing 198 th of 8,783runners.Quote from Twin Cities Marathon home page – “Lancewants others with pacemakers to know that life is not over.While it limited him from some of the things he enjoyed, ithelped him discover others, like running, volunteering <strong>and</strong>motivational speaking: things that not only changed his life,but inspired others.”Lance’s amazing <strong>and</strong> inspirational year not only madehim an obvious choice for this year’s <strong>Heart</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong><strong>Trophy</strong> but it was also why the club nominated him for theMost Outst<strong>and</strong>ing Individual Performance category of theAMA Awards presented during the AMA Championships.Congratulations Lance Purdon31 st recipient of the <strong>Heart</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>Trophy</strong>The task of identifying recipients <strong>and</strong> preparing citationsfor these two awards was performed by the Awards Sub-Committee (Bryan Thomas (chair), Cory Collins, MickHoran <strong>and</strong> Margaret Taylor). Our other tasks are todetermine potential recipients of Life Membership, theEncouragement Award (monthly run/walk h<strong>and</strong>icaps), theClohessy <strong>Trophy</strong> (monthly throwing h<strong>and</strong>icaps) <strong>and</strong> in thefuture the Stuart Reid Commemorative <strong>Trophy</strong> for clubperson(s)of the year. We appreciate members’ suggestions ofpersons they believe worthy of consideration for theseprestigious ‘club-person’ awards.400m hurdles would have placed third in Sacramento whilehis flat 400m was seventh. Phil won the annual HigginsMemorial 800m H<strong>and</strong>icap for the fourth time <strong>and</strong> wasrunner-up in the final of the ‘Gift’.THIRD PLACED FRISTAD AWARDWOMEN – KATHY SIMS W60: Kathy has maintainedher excellent form since enjoying success at Sacramento in2011. Her best performances this season would have beensecond in the 5000m, fourth in the 1500m <strong>and</strong> eighth in the800m at the most recent World Championships. Kathy wasthe female winner of the Moore Series <strong>and</strong> runner-up, <strong>and</strong>first woman, in the Pennington Series as she was also inthe Higgins.Kathy was W60 champion in the City 2 Surf, CanberraTimes Fun Run <strong>and</strong> the Vets’ Half Marathon. To cap off anoutst<strong>and</strong>ing season Kathy was a member of the invitationalAustralia 4x800m relay team that set a World Record atthe recent national championships.MEN – MICHAEL RODEN M45: Michael is our mostoutst<strong>and</strong>ing sprinter <strong>and</strong> was undefeated all season. Hisbest performances in both the 200 <strong>and</strong> 400m would haveplaced him second at Sacramento while his 100m timewould have been fifth. Michael’s win in the 400m at thenationals set a new Championship Record. During the localseason Michael won both the Boag <strong>and</strong> Daniels Series. Healso won the ‘Gift’ for the fifth occasion.
