30 YEARS AGO (June 1983)Roger Abbott and Reg Johnson each wrote a report inthe Vetrunner on a marathon they had run recently.Roger's was the NSW Marathon held on a double out-andbackcourse at Holdsworth Army Camp. Roger ran 2:53.41to be the second M45. Tony May 2:59.12 and Peter Trotter3:42 also ran well.Reg reported on the Australian Championships held inSydney. Club members to finish were – Frank Green 2:34,Tony May 2:53, Jeff Culnane 2:56, Derek Quinto 2:59,George Hanzar 3:02, Mal Bone and Hilton Kobus 3:03,Peter Tesseyman 3:10, Wendy Davidson 3:32, ChappieDyson 3:33 and Reg Johnson 3:42.Five of the 42 teams that participated in the annualCanberra to Gunning Relay were Vets’ teams. Vets ‘A’ teamfinished 17th in 5:14.59 narrowly beating our rivals ForestFleet Feet by a mere 53 seconds after a tough battle over80km.The second Vets' Half Marathon attracted 157 runners(138 men and 19 women). Age group winners – M35 GarryHand 68.47, M40 Eric Hodge 71.10, M45 Peter Kallio 72.52,M50 Jack Tonkin 89.17, M55 Peter Tesseyman 85.54, M60Lloyd Darwin 107.49, M65 Joe Mayer 108.33, W30 JennyCundy 101.26, W35 Jo Cullen 93.42, W40 Helen Palethorpe107.13, and W45 Maureen O'Shea 93.42.The 7.5km course at Red Hill was the venue for thismonth's handicap. On a very cold and windy morningGerald Lofthouse was best of the 49 runners. WinstonGregory was second and Graeme Smith third. This was a dramatic break in tradition aspreviously they were held in homes of committee membersand would often go until midnight.Our Track and field Dinner Dance and PresentationNight was also at the Yamba Club. Heart FoundationTrophy was awarded to John Busteed. Fristad Awards forathletics excellence went to Ken Daniels and MargaretTaylor (gold), Charlie Rann and Jan Erickson (silver) andKevin Matthews and Jane Greaves (bronze). OwenHenness was awarded the prestigious Johnson Trophy.Our 12 th annual ACT Vets' Half Marathon was run incold and windy conditions. M40 Trevor Jacobs and W30 JillReich were the outright winners in 76.13 and 89.09,respectively. M55 Peter Kallio 88.47% and W55 AnneYoung 75.28% WMA age graded scores had the bestperformances. EwenDrummond set an ACT M70 shot put record by heaving thebig steel ball 9.03m.10 YEARS AGO (June 2003)Our cross country championship was again held inconjunction with the ACTCCC at Weston Park. Men over60 years-of-age and all women ran 8km while the youngermen ran the three lap 12km course. Age group winnerswere – W30 Cecilia Schlegal, W40 Annette Sugden, W45Kathy Southgate, W50 Kathy Sims, W55 MargaretMcSpadden, W60 Caroline Campbell, W65 Anne Young:M60 Clive Glover, M65 Bob Chapman, M70 Michael Freerand M75 Rad Leovic. The 12km winners were – M35 BruceWright, M40 Peter James, M45 Andy Horsburgh, M50Peter Clarke and M55 Des Brown.On a cool and foggy Queen’s Birthday morning a groupof nine hardy souls (including members Ian Bradfield, Pamand Richard Faulks and Alan Towill) ran across LakeGeorge and back again.The monthly run/walk handicap was also held inatrocious weather of fog, rain and even sleet that laterturned to snow. The venue was the rocky Rani Road coursein Black Mountain. Winners of the 8km long run were NeilGentle from Dawn Casey and Carmel Lynch. Neil had abad fall about 500m from the finish but rose to his feet todash downhill to the finish. The Frylink gold medal waswon by Bev Breen from David Meyers and Ian Bowden. Thewalk handicap was won by Brenda Day from PeterFreeman and Pauline Rohan. Despite the unpleasantconditions David Meyers had a memorable morning notonly winning a silver medal but also receiving his ‘100 runs’T-shirt.The throwing handicap was also conducted in bitterlycold weather. Frank Nugent won the monthly trophy aheadof 27 others who attempted to put the shot and hurl thediscus. Mary Wahren won the silver medal and Jen Bourkethe bronze.By Bryan Thomas
