MONTZ STRUCTURED PACKINGSSYNONYMOUS FOR QUALITY IN THE FIELD OF THERMAL FRACTIONATINGStructured packings are characterized by a veryefficient technique and a versatile range of applications. The packings offer a high separation efficiency, goodwettability and a low pressure drop. They can beadapted to address any fractionation problem fordistillation, absorption and liquid-liquid extraction. The special features of Montz packings allow forvariable geometric dimensions and the choice ofdifferent surface structures. This flexibility can solvenearly any fractionation problem.Packing types A3, B1, BSH, C1 and M feature avariety of configurations, for example:n A3-type packing uses a woven wire gauze, ribbon or stripn B1-type packing uses a cold rolled sheet metalfoil ribbon or stripn BSH-type packing uses an expanded metalribbon or stripn M-type packing has a curved shaped crimpingregardless of the base material (wire gauze, cold rolled foil or expanded metal)We also now offer an MN-type packing that hasa NEW curvature to the crimping regardless ofthe base material (wire, gauze, cold rolled foil orexpanded metal). The waves are inclined toward the vertical, and together with the adjacent plate, they formintersecting flow ducts. This packing structureresults in large interfacial areas and provides anintimate contact between the gas and liquid phase. An exact adaptation to the respectiverequirements is ensured by special internals suchas liquid distributors, flash equipment, liquidcollector trays and vapor distributors. All theseinternals are carefully adapted to the packings andto the problem to be solved. They are subject to apermanent quality control.2

MONTZ-PAK TYPE BSHHIGH-PERFORMANCE PACKING FOR THERMAL MASS TRANSFERThe BSH-packing combines the essential features and characteristics ofmetal sheet and wire mesh packing. A remarkable characteristic of theBSH-packing is the special surface structure. This consists of rhombicperforations with alternating burred-up edges. This structureensures an excellent and uniform wetting under lowest andhigh liquid loads. Turbulences caused by the burred-uprims of the orifice ensure a permanent mixing of theliquid film on the packing surface.8Characteristicsn high capacity and flexibilityn good wettability, thusensuring excellent contactsurfaces between vapor andliquidn high fractionating efficiencyalmost up to capacity limitn liquid loads 0.2 to >150 m 3 /m 2 /hn low pressure dropn solutions for any fractionating problem thanks to avariable specific surfaceApplicationsn vacuum columnsn normal-pressure and high-pressure columnsn absorptionn natural gas dryingn refinery columnsn petrochemical columnsn wastewater stripping columnsn fractionating columns for the chemical industryn columns for dealcoholizing beern revamping of existing tray or random rings columnsto improve their capacityMaterialsn stainless steels such as : 304, 410S, 316, 316 Ti,316L and 904Ln carbon steeln Hastelloy C4, aluminum, copper, titanium, monel, tantalum, etc.n other materials are availableupon requestColumn Datan column diameter 70mm up to11m and moren liquid load from 20 l/m 2 /hn operating pressures fromvacuum up to 100 barn minimal liquid hold-upSeparation stagesEight theoretical stages per meterand more are possible dependingon the design.AssemblyThe packing layersare manufactured either as one piece or in segments.Installation in the columns is effected either through shellflanges or manholes.TYPE FOR HIGHSTANDARD TYPE (45 O ) THROUGHPUTS (60 O )PAK-TYPESPEC. MONTZ-PAK TYPE M / MNTHE NEW HIGH-PERFORMANCE PACKINGThe Montz-PakType M and Type MN arefurther developments of the tried andtrusted Montz structured packing Type B1, A3and BSH. It has its own patent coverage. The optimizedcrimp geometry creates two packing types thatmeet the demands for high separation efficiencyand throughput exceptionally well. The new Type MN-series gives 30% more separationefficiency along with higher throughput capacity whencompared to standard packing crimps. Higher purities, small column heights and simple tower debottleneckingare now possible. The Type M-series allows throughput increases of 30%compared to columns equipped with standard packingtypes due to the reduced pressure drop. This packing onlyoffers the same efficiency as standard packing types. Both packing types are patented in the USA andEurope. Layer height depends upon crimp shape whichprevents liquid hold-up at the lower end of the packinglayer at high gas loads.Type M and Type MN packing are ideal for newcolumns or tower revamps. Revamps from standardpacked columns to the new high performance packingtypes consistently deliver outstanding performances.Applicationsn vacuum columnsn normal-pressure and highpressure columnsn absorptionn natural gas drying withglycols refinery columnsn revamping existing packing, random rings ortray columnsCharacteristics Type Mn maximized capacityn lowest pressure dropn same separation efficiencycompared to standardpacking typesCharacteristics Type MNn higher capacityn lower pressure dropn highest separation efficiencyCorrugation form of theMontz-Pak Type M / MNDetail photo of the Montz-pakType M / MN from belowAVAILABLE PACKINGTYPESPAK-TYPESPEC. RANDOM TOWER PACKINGSSADDLE, PALL AND RASCHIG RINGSRandom packings are an economic solution toincrease tower efficiency/capacity and are ideal fornew and existing towers.SADDLE RINGSIdeal For Both High Pressure AndVacuum TowersMetallic saddle rings (formerly sold as M/s.Norton Type IMTP or Nutter rings, nowowned by Koch and Sulzer respectively)give the best of both worlds in termsof performance i.e. low-pressure dropand high efficiency. Hence it can beeffectively used in both high pressureas well as vacuum towers. Some of itsother advantages include large effectiveinterfacial area, high mechanical strength(its monolithic construction overcomesthe problem of “opening out” at endsas experienced in ring shaped packings)and low cost. It is available in varioussizes, which give different combinationsof efficiency and pressure drop. They areresistant to most acids, alkalis andsolvents at high temperatures andalso display good erosion andthermal shock resistance. At thesame time they have high crushingstrength due to increased thicknessover other random packing andtherefore have a long service life. They are currently available invariable sizes such as 25mm,38mm and 50mm.10

LIQUID DISTRIBUTORSKNOW-HOW FROM MONTZ FOR MAXIMUM PERFORMANCELiquid distributors are the most important elements in rectifyingcolumns with structured packings. The high separation efficiencyof structured packings can only be achieved with high-precisionliquid distributors. Over the years, Julius Montz hasacquired the know-how necessaryto design efficient liquiddistributors.Liquid distributor type R for assemblythrough manholes DN 600Each of the distributors consists of a centrallyarranged main channel with side channelsbranching off from this. Central and side channelsform a communicating system so that liquid levelgradients within the distributor are avoided. The individual channels are fixed at a supporting ringand are individually and exactly adjustable (i.e. the distributoris not situated on the packing bedding). The liquid is fed via apre-distributing system into the main channel of the distributor.Assembly can be made through shell flanges or manholes.General features of all Montz Liquid Distributors:n uniform distribution: deviations between the individual drain tubes< =3 to 5%n numbers of drip points: 70 to 250m 3 /m 2 /h(distributors for 201/m 2 /h have been successfully applied e.g. distillation of glycerine)n flexibility: standard turn down ratio 1:3 (higher ranges of loading –e.g. 1:10 and more – are possible using multi-stage distributors)n design know-how for viscous liquidsn diameters range from 70 mm to 12 m and moren the same design principle applies to diameters from200 mm to >12mn liquid feed by pre-distribution system can be adapted tomost applicationsn contamination is reduced because our designs areresistant to dirt and sedimentable impuritiesn Can be adjusted easily with standard fitter’s toolsn Fits solidly against the column walln Installation and inspection can be made through manholesfor columns from DN 800; smaller columns can be accessedthrough shell flanges.Liquid distributor type R forassembly through shell flangesLiquid distributor type R DN 10600on the distributor test bench11

LIQUID DISTRIBUTOR TYPE SSOLUTIONS FOR EXTREMELY SMALL SPRINKLING DENSITIESThe patented liquid distributor Type Sis suitable for extremely small sprinklingdensities. The special design enables ahigh density of drip points so that thepacking surface is completely wettedeven with small amounts of liquid. The Channel-style Type Sliquid distributorThe basic design of the Montz channel-type liquid distributorType S is the tried and trusted Montz modular system. Thestandard drain tubes have additional drainage sleeves so thatthe liquid flows from each tube and is split into a number ofsmall individual flows. The design enables drip point densitiesof at least 100 per m 2 for even small amounts of liquid.Channel-style Type Sn liquid distributor for lowest volumetric flows (smallestflows to date around 20 l/m 2 /h)n liquid outlet through drain tubes similar to Type Rn each drain tube has drainage sleeves with lateralslots and seven or more drip fingers at its lowerend to split the liquid flow into correspondingpartial flowsOperating ranges:n 1-stage: approximately 1:3n 2-stage: approximately 1:10(higher ranges upon request)n number of drip points 100 to1,000 per m 2n throughputs 0.02 to approximately70 m 3 /m 2 /hn insensitive to sedimentable dirt particlesSolutions for thetoughest applicationsBecause of the great demands made by liquid distributionon structured packings, Montz has gained a reputation asa specialist in this field.
