Elektrėnai Municipality was established
on March 19, 2000 upon execution
of the reform of the country territorial
administrative units. At the moment of
its establishment, the new municipality
covered 55 thous ha; had the population
of about 32 thousand. After incorporation
of the cadastre territory of Liutonys
Village in Kaišiadorys District in 2002
and having taken the Population Census,
it was established that the municipality
area was 50,9 thous ha (0,8 percent of
the total area of Lithuania), the population
was 28,9 thous (0,4 per cent of the
total population of Lithuania).
There are 2 towns in the municipality:Elektrėnai
and Vievis, a small town
Semeliškės and 276 villages.
RURAL TOURISM ACCOMMODATION
Elektrėnai municipality is situated in
the South-eastern Lithuania, in Vilnius
Region. The municipality has very good
geographic location and convenient
communication (the territory is crossed
by the highway Vilnius – Klaipėda and
very important railway).
The municipality centre Elektrėnai
was established in 1961 with the start
of construction of the power station
in the midway between Vilnius and
Kaunas. Neighbourhood of the largest
Lithuanian towns prompts the development
of small business and suburban
economy; beautiful landscape, abundance
of archaeological and cultural
monuments, educational tourism attract
crowds of tourists.
Elektrėnai town is situated on a halfway
of the highway Vilnius-Klaipėda. The
town began to grow after the resolution
to construct a thermal Power Pant on the
River Strėva in 1960. The new formed
water basin joined 8 lakes. At present,
the power station uses only 3 percent
its capacities and is the main reserve of
Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant.
Elektrėnai is situated on the bank of the
Elektrėnai Lake with many islands and
bays which is the most favourite place of
recreation of residents and guests. They
can sail by sailboats, water-bicycles as
well as go in various water sports.
Well equipped Ice Palace attracts many
visitors. People of Elektrėnai like to go
skating and playing hockey. Many famous
Lithuanian hockey – players began
their career in this palace.

The land of Švenčionys is particularly
famous for its unique and untouched
nature, blue-eyed lakes and lush green
forests. There are around 300 lakes in
total in Švenčionys District. The largest,
Kretuonai Lake, is unique in comprising
six islands serving as ornithological
reserves. Also of note are the nearby settlements
famous among archaeologists
for their Neolithic archaeological monuments.
The most popular tourist route
stretches along the Žeimena River.
The greatest treasure of the region is
the huge pine forest, covering some
53% of the total territory. Of note are
Labanoras, Sirvėta and Asveja Regional
Parks. The region covers a part of
Aukštaitija National Park.
One of the most famous historical monuments
is the 18 th century Cirkliškis
Estate. Because of its energetic and inventive
owners the place takes an important
place in the cultural life of the
Lithuanian elite. Many famous artists
and musicians visit it frequently.
The most significant churches are the
wooden Labonoras Holy Virgin Mary’s
church, and the Strunaitis church. It is
worth to visit the ancient watermills in
Bruknynė, Strūnaitis and Pakretuonė.
