Elektrėnai Municipality was established<br />
on March 19, 2000 upon execution<br />
of the reform of the country territorial<br />
administrative units. At the moment of<br />
its establishment, the new municipality<br />
covered 55 thous ha; had the population<br />
of about 32 thousand. After incorporation<br />
of the cadastre territory of Liutonys<br />
Village in Kaišiadorys District in 2002<br />
and having taken the Population Census,<br />
it was established that the municipality<br />
area was 50,9 thous ha (0,8 percent of<br />
the total area of <strong>Lithuania</strong>), the population<br />
was 28,9 thous (0,4 per cent of the<br />
total population of <strong>Lithuania</strong>).<br />
There are 2 towns in the municipality:Elektrėnai<br />
and Vievis, a small town<br />
Semeliškės and 276 villages.<br />
RURAL TOURISM ACCOMMODATION<br />
Elektrėnai municipality is situated in<br />
the South-eastern <strong>Lithuania</strong>, in Vilnius<br />
Region. The municipality has very good<br />
geographic location and convenient<br />
communication (the territory is crossed<br />
by the highway Vilnius – Klaipėda and<br />
very important railway).<br />
The municipality centre Elektrėnai<br />
was established in 1961 with the start<br />
of construction of the power station<br />
in the midway between Vilnius and<br />
Kaunas. Neighbourhood of the largest<br />
<strong>Lithuania</strong>n towns prompts the development<br />
of small business and suburban<br />
economy; beautiful landscape, abundance<br />
of archaeological and cultural<br />
monuments, educational tourism attract<br />
crowds of tourists.<br />
Elektrėnai town is situated on a halfway<br />
of the highway Vilnius-Klaipėda. The<br />
town began to grow after the resolution<br />
to construct a thermal Power Pant on the<br />
River Strėva in 1960. The new formed<br />
water basin joined 8 lakes. At present,<br />
the power station uses only 3 percent<br />
its capacities and is the main reserve of<br />
Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant.<br />
Elektrėnai is situated on the bank of the<br />
Elektrėnai Lake with many islands and<br />
bays which is the most favourite place of<br />
recreation of residents and guests. They<br />
can sail by sailboats, water-bicycles as<br />
well as go in various water sports.<br />
Well equipped Ice Palace attracts many<br />
visitors. People of Elektrėnai like to go<br />
skating and playing hockey. Many famous<br />
<strong>Lithuania</strong>n hockey – players began<br />
their career in this palace.<br />

The land of Švenčionys is particularly<br />
famous for its unique and untouched<br />
nature, blue-eyed lakes and lush green<br />
forests. There are around 300 lakes in<br />
total in Švenčionys District. The largest,<br />
Kretuonai Lake, is unique in comprising<br />
six islands serving as ornithological<br />
reserves. Also of note are the nearby settlements<br />
famous among archaeologists<br />
for their Neolithic archaeological monuments.<br />
The most popular tourist route<br />
stretches along the Žeimena River.<br />
The greatest treasure of the region is<br />
the huge pine forest, covering some<br />
53% of the total territory. Of note are<br />
Labanoras, Sirvėta and Asveja Regional<br />
Parks. The region covers a part of<br />
Aukštaitija National Park.<br />
One of the most famous historical monuments<br />
is the 18 th century Cirkliškis<br />
Estate. Because of its energetic and inventive<br />
owners the place takes an important<br />
place in the cultural life of the<br />
<strong>Lithuania</strong>n elite. Many famous artists<br />
and musicians visit it frequently.<br />
The most significant churches are the<br />
wooden Labonoras Holy Virgin Mary’s<br />
church, and the Strunaitis church. It is<br />
worth to visit the ancient watermills in<br />
Bruknynė, Strūnaitis and Pakretuonė.<br />
