Distance Skuodas – Vilnius: 337 km Skuodas is a land of Kuršiai and Žemaičiai in the North-Western part of Lithuania close to the Latvian border. The archeological findings say that Apuolė settlement is the oldest mentioned in written sources about Lithuania (853). Historical sources mention the name of Skuodas for the first time in1253 as a part of Kuršas territory. In 1572 Skuodas was granted the rights of Magdeburg (right to self-government). J. Chodkevičius governed the town in the mean time. Until the World War I Skuodas town, located on the border, was famous for its markets, as well as its fair, which was attended by many merchants and visitors. During the interwar period Skuodas was the centre of region. It had a shoe factory Kontinent, famous for its excellent production and a mill with an electric power plant. During the World War II, the town was largely destroyed. Only the Evangelic- Lutheran Church, built in 1821, and the Catholic Church, built in 1850, have been preserved. Many Jews lived in Skuodas before the World War II. They worked in trade and handicrafts. In 1950 Skuodas became the administrative centre of the region The town was rebuilt from ruins, new administrative and residential areas were constructed. The remaining old buildings with their histories, as well as monuments built to commemorate significant events and dates can tell us a lot about the interesting historical past of the town and of the generations of people who lived and worked there. Skuodas is the administrative centre of the region and has the population of 25 499. The museum, culture centre, library, gymnasium of Pr. Žadeikis, Bartuva secondary school, M. Valančius primary school, Skuodas agricultural, business, trade and service school, art school, kindergarten, nursing house for old people, hotel Apuolė, post office, hospital, first–aid centre, several banks and several shopping centres operate in Skuodas. There are about 240 personal companies and 100 joint – stock companies, about 70 public institutions established in Skuodas. Like in every town , there are many kinds of entertainment facilities, concerts and various traditional events are organized. Šiauliai is a center of Northern Lithuanian district, founded in water-parting of rivers Dubysa and Venta, Talša and Rėkyva lakes. The first documentary reference of the battle in the Sun (Šiauliai) land that took place on September 22, 1236 was made in the Livonian chronicles. That date is considered to be the date of establishment of the city. During the 16 th -18 th centuries Šiauliai was the center of economy. The history of Šiauliai industry is connected with the recast of leather, confectionery, beer producing. During the wars of the 20 th century the city was almost gone from the surface of earth, that’s why it has no old town today. Šiauliai is the third city according to the area (81,13 sq km) and the fourth according to the number of population (133,9 thousand). The most popular palce in Šiauliai is the Broadway for pedestrians full of pulsating city life. The Hill of Crosses is a shrine for most Catholics. The first crosses were put to honour the dead after the rebellion of 1831 suppressed by the Tsarist authorities. When Soviet authorities took power in Lithuania after the World War II they tried to remove the crosses for many times. But the crosses were always secretly replaced overnight. Today, more than 80,000 crosses are a testimony to the spirit of the Lithuanian people. The Hill was visited by Pope John Paul II during his trip to Lithuania in 1993. During his visit to a Franciscan monastery of the mount of Verna (Italy) in 1994, the Pope John Paul II encouraged the brothers to build a monastery by the Hill of Crosses. A hermit of the Franciscan Brothers was consecrated on July 7, 2000. The architectural complex of the Cathedral consists of the Cathedral itself and a churchyard fence with a gate. The construction of St. Apostles Peter and Paul’s Church began in 1594 on the site of a decayed wooden church. The building was erected in the Renaissance style, with quite a few features typical of mediaeval architecture. In 1997, the church was granted the status of a cathedral. There are a number of stories telling why the Cathedral was built at this place, and not somewhere else. A legend has it that upon a time a huge ox wandered to Šiauliai, laid down to rest, and passed away in its sleep. As the time passed, the wind covered the dead ox with dust and sand, and thus a small hill occurred. It is that hill St. Apostles Peter and Paul’s Cathedral stands on today. Sundial Square Ežero – Lukauskio St, the intersection of Ežero St and S. Šalkauskio St An extraordinary anniversary of the city’s foundation, its 750 th jubilee, prompted the date to be marked in a unique and appropriate manner. A contest was announced in 1981, and the winners were three artists from Šiauliai: A. Černiauskas, R. Jurėla and A.Višniūnas. Sun Dial Square embodies the tree symbols related to the origins of the city, its history and name: the sun symbolizes the battle of Saulė, which was fought in the vicinity of Šiauliai, while the archer is related to the origin of the city‘s name. A legend tells us that the name of Šiauliai originated from the word “šaulys” meaning an archer. The symbols of the sun and the archer unite the third one, the time. Hour-counting digits, 12, 3 and 6, are cast into the square floor. The sequence of the digits forms the figure1236, i.e.the year when the name of Šiauliai was mentioned for the first time. Vilniaus Street – Pedestrian Boulevard It is the oldest walking street in Lithuania, and the 3 rd in Europe. Walking in Šiauliai Boulevard, you can enjoy architecture, a fountain, museums, shops and restaurants. The boulevard was opened almost 30 years ago and now is under renovation. Salduvė Mound Once upon a time, there was a wooden castle standing on Salduve Mound, which was destroyed during battles against the Order of Sword-Bearers. A legend tells us that the duke of Šiauliai and his beloved girl lived on the hill; however, they were not married. The God Perkūnas punished them and killed them with a flash of lightning. Their love was very sweet that’s why the hill is called Salduvė. Gaidžio laikrodžio (Cockerel Clock) Square The intersection of Vilniaus St and Tilžės St In 2003, Šiauliai celebrated the 767th anniversary of its foundation, and now you can hear the crow of one of the renovated symbols, the cockerel, “Come for a date!” Lovers and businesslike people, too, come here for a date or a meeting - “See you at the cockerel’s” is a common phrase. Now, the symbol of downtown Šiauliai not only crows, but welcomes passers-by with his “Welcome to Šiauliai”, too. The welcoming phrase can be heard in English, German, French, Russian, Spanish, Yiddish, Swedish, Romany, and other languages. Leisure and Entertainment Park „Beržynėlis“ Šiauliai City Municipality and Šiauliai TIC have made a leisure and entertainment park „Beržynėlis“ for families, especially for children. The park has many playgrounds, a mini zoo yard, wooden domestic and exotic animals, other entertainments. Also you can rent a bicycle or scooter, or just enjoy some icecream. The Park Service offers recreation facilities near the lakes and rivers, sightseeing tours around Kurtuvėnai environs, festivals near lakes Pašvinis, Bijotė and Vėžežeris. Accommodation in a hotel or a private house can be booked at the Information Centre of Kurtuvėnai Regional Park. A horse centre open allyear-round offers ride lessons and travels on horseback or by coach. The bike rental is also available.
